What are your longsword tunes, Helena?

Two tunes in 9/8 -
Old Wife of Coverdale - Ampleforth
Papa Stour - Papa Stour

Those are exactly the two tunes I've been playing recently.  Pretty content with my version of Old Wife of Coverdale in Am but still working on re-learning Papa Stour as I originally started playing it right hand only. Papa Stour was at one time my least favourite tune of all time after hearing in played all day at a sword dance workshop.  Then I heard it on an old High Level Ranters album and it was magical, I listened to it lots until one day it came out of my bellows (accidentally). I've only recently revisited it with a view to doing something creative with the left hand.

I guess sword dance tunes could be included under the theme of morris music. I don't consider sword to be morris but I accept that most people think I'm wrong about that  :M

Brill - I'd be happy for both of you to record your versions of the Papa Stour tune for this theme - I'm sure nobody would complain. After all, stretching the theme's what it's all about init!  (:)

There's something about the repetitiveness of longsword tunes that I find oddly appealing. Lester's Old Wife of Coverdale is a good example, The Lass of Dallogill is another. They have a quality of almost relentlessness to them, but they also lend well to all sorts of variations.

I read that as a selection of tunes from an obscure morris team called Eminor Morris! Doh! Nice one Lester :-)

Ah that's a pretty fast version - definitely wouldn't want to dance to it (not as if I even know the dance but just in case). :D
Well played, it shows your experience with the tune. Way for me to go.

I've been recording some stuff today while practising morris tunes but having problems with the video editing software so in the meantime here's one from my Soundcloud, with apologies to those who grumble about posting old stuff:

The Corn and The Blue - a tune written by Ed Rennie for a dance in the Ducklington style for Pilgrim Morris Men of Guildford.

Also a fake morris tune 'in the style of' of my own devising:

Fruitless Trip to Uppermill

Very nice tune with a good bounce to it

I love the Sherborne Waltz in all its guises: a tune of brilliant simplicity & musicality that epitomizes for me the genius of English traditional music.

In the beginning, when I was struggling to understand the variety of free-reed instruments available & the different musical traditions associated with them, I came across a YouTube recording by Forrest of the Sherborne Waltz played with a unique interpretation. The fact that Forrest was able to create such a wonderful sound with the simplest (almost) of boxes, made me understand how less can be more in the world of squeezeboxes & convinced me to forget about PA's, CBA's & the like & embrace the melodeon.

I love playing The Sherborne Waltz in a variety different ways, but here, I borrow shamelessly from Forrest's original interpretation:

AirTime, that is really beautifully played! I'm impressed that all that lovely chording can be played on a single row.

Here's my new tune that I've been working on all month: The Jenny Lind Polka. It's used in several different Morris traditions, but this isn't meant to be faithful to any specific tradition, but as learned from John Kirkpatrick's "How to Play the English Melodeon" DVD (so credit for the arrangement really belongs to JK).

It's sadly a bit sloppy and unpolished, with a real clanger at the end that would probably have prematurely ended the tune if it weren't four bars from the end of the thing. It's a shame about the fumbles, really, because there are other moments that manage to approach some degree of, dare I say, panache. Ah well, I will keep working on it; I want to finish figuring out all the right hand harmony stuff John plays the second time through the B part. Fun tune, though!

Yes, nicely done Jesse. Good rhythm and interesting ornaments. Not really a clanger, just a quiet moment.

I'm with you on this one. Sword isn't morris. Having said that I was so impressed by Green Man Sword (?) singing "Collier Lads" (aka Byker Hill and Walker Shore) as their rapper music that I was really tempted to proffer it...not least because the first place I ever saw/heard what I now know was a melodeon in the pub (almost) beneath the arches of Byker viaduct. Need to learn to play it first and I am running out of month.

I'm in complete agreement with this and I enjoyed the performance immensely Jesse. The steady tempo brought out the best in the tune, whatever you are doing, keep on doing it!
