merging abc files?
« on: May 06, 2019, 07:52:42 PM »

Hi Gang,
I have several abc files of tunes that I'd like to merge into one file set using abcexplorer ( or easyabc if that's a better tool ).
Rather than copy and paste each individual tune into the one opened file in the app, is there another way?
cheers

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Open them in a text editor (notepad) and just copy and paste them into one of the originals. Make sure when you save the result that it gets saved as an .abc file not megafile.abc.txt for instance.

Once you've done that, you should probably renumber the X: fields in the merged file so that they remain unique. EasyABC has a menu option for doing this, no doubt ABCExplorer does too.

Easy ABC is far better at renumbering the X: fields, sorting the tunes into alphabetical order first is also a doddle. One of Explorer's failings this, and the reason why I use both bits of software on PC, horses for courses.

ABC Explorer does do both of these very easily (1.6.1), although the context dependent menu can be confusing at first. Unles you mean Internet Explorer, of course  >:E >:E

I normally used abcexplorer as my preferred choice.
I then close the file and open it in easyabc to re-order titles and sort x fields. I'll switch back to abcexplorer to generate a pdf of all the tunes in the file.

I've never looked properly in abcexplorer, will have a poke around later.

-> Open new file in easyABC
-> click "File"
-> click "Import and Add"
-> select abc and txt and other music files you'd like to add
-> enjoy your new songbook.

No copy pasting by hand necessary.

Have just dug around abcexplorer, following Malcolm's post.

Along the top menu bar: Tools > File tools
produces a menu box.
'Re-index' tab re-sorts the x fields.
'sort' tab allows you to sort by fields such as title.

thank you Malcolm, I never knew it was there!

One of the reasons I still like ABCexplorer is the fact that it has all these surprising bits of functionality. It would be nice if it was brought up to date, but it hasn't particularly suffered through time.
Incidentally I've never regarded the X: field as anything other than an indication that an ABC tune is about to follow. The actual numbering is largely irrelevant and easily damaged, particularly by subsequent owners, so I regard it as transient.

Yes, I prefer abcexplorer, though have used easyabc for a couple of things.
I find exporting tunes as pdf's easier in explorer. I'm certainly going to dig around it a bit more now.

Chris - my reason for asking the original question was to combine all my Buttrey transcriptions into one file.
I feel a strong ownership to the ones I've transcribed!

It's just occurred to me that you can also do this from within the Command Prompt Window, using the COPY
command. Just open a Command Prompt Window(*), make sure you are in the right directory, and then:

copy <file1>.abc+<file2>.abc+<file3>.abc+... <mergedfile>.abc

(*)WINDOW-KEY+X, then select 'Command Prompt'. Type 'help copy' for help with the copy command.
