One Man and his Box. What instrument is JK playing it on?
« on: May 19, 2019, 09:54:51 PM »

Just got hold of the 'One Man and His Box' CD after hearing some people play 'Jump at the Sun' on Youtube and loved JK's sound and THEN I heard 'Fits and Starts' on the same album and thought wow.

Anybody know what instrument(s) he is playing it on please?

Da bass is wicked and I was immediately at the fairground with candy floss in my hand!

Fits and Starts is played on an Anglo concertina multi-tracked with a bass Anglo.

Here he is playing the bass concertina in a duet with a bass accordion

A 32 bar hornpipe in the keys of C and F but with accidental F#s and G#s. I'll be playing that on an EC then!  :|glug

JK has really developed a wonderful sound with the combination of bass, baritone, and tenor concertinas and there are plenty of tracks on his more recent records showcasing this combination. One of my favorites is the first track of "Every Mortal Place" which uses a bit of studio trickery to pull off a really exciting overlapping crossfade from the last note of a tune played on a two row melodeon to one on baritone and bass concertina.

Here it is, tune change is at 2:20ish: https://youtu.be/mqkGeBj8I2s

JK has many instruments but in concert I have normally seen him playing his PA bass style instruments.  The sleeve picture for the album shows 2 of this type of insturment 2x 2 row melodeons, 2 x concertina and a Hohner one row 4 stop.  It does not identify what is played where "various anglo concertinas, melodeons and button accordions!

And he now has a two row 4 voice made specially for him by Emmanuel Pariselle.

I love the fact that he is so influential and ubiquitous among squeezers that he can just be referred to by his initials. I was first introduced to him on Richard Thompson's first solo record, Henry the Human fly" although he must have also played on some Fairport recordings. Been a fan ever since.

I met John folk camping in 1970 and he's one of my oldest friends. Even then, and to a teenage Chris it was clear that he was a genius. We fixed him a tour to North East, just after he took the plunge as a professional.

At my club in Darlington he was bizarrely double booked with Fred Jordan. Come John's turn, as so often he forgot the words.  Fred was next to me and confided That lad'll get nowhere, forgettin' 'is words loik thaat!   The rest is history …
