Reed dropping a tone.
« on: May 19, 2019, 08:26:45 PM »

Horrible noise from the low octave D of the 1040/G.

One of the D reeds has dropped it's pitch to a sharp C (sharp of C, but not into C# territory).  Taped off as a temporary measure  but not clear what to do next....though I have a strong suspicion the  "build a tuning table"  and get a tuner on the smartphone have both just moved several steps up the priority list.

If it has dropped a tone it is almost certainly fractured, give it a serious ping and the reed tip will probably part company. If you let me know which reed it is I probably have a free spare somewhere.

Thanks Lester,  It will be tomorrow afternoon before I get a chance to open it up again. How high would you lift the reed tip for a "serious ping" ?

Cape my last question. If it wasn't fractured before it is now.

It was fractured.  Reed steel is very tough, it will bend before it breaks.  It only breaks if it was cracked.

Thanks Theo- it did have that feeling of falling apart when it broke completely- but it is still reassuring to be told it wasn't just me being clumsy.

You wont need a tuning table for one reed estimate what the pitch is from the reeds on either side. Get a  replacement from the kind offer or from Charlie Marshal. If they love you  they will tune it as close as and you may not even need to adjust it when waxed back in with new valves. If you do you can use a basic tuner a tuning app and your ear.Becareful not to affect other reeds when in there. knocking off valves or spilling wax for example. If you fail then its fettler time anyway.

Having attended Lester's DIY fettling workshop it's time I made a tuning table.
