Tune of the Month for June 2019: The Rope Waltz
« on: May 31, 2019, 09:56:52 PM »

Yay - it won!

Rope Waltz -  I used to play this a long time ago - it's from Orkney, and here played by Lester: https://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.com/2013/01/tune-141-rope-waltz.html

There's a couple more versions of it (which appear to be more accidental loaded) here https://thesession.org/tunes/13443 though I will admit it's the standard non-accidental one that I used to play.

Happy playing!

Clive

Here's an attempt at the Ropey er...Rope Waltz. I'd not come across it before. I don't think it'll prove a keeper for me. There aren't many waltzes I can get too excited about.

It's played on the outer row of my newly acquired (in a bout of MADness) Hohner Koch Eb/Bb.

My playing from a couple of years ago. I think I've taken a few liberties, and I hope the gods (and Melnet) will forgive me...

Not often do I hear a tune and immediately know which other melody I'd like to combine it with in a mini set. Will have to relearn the other tune because I know it already in Gmaj but really like to play it in Dmaj just like Rope Waltz. Very much looking forward to this. (:)

Here’s my rendition.
https://youtu.be/zrzpYdm5xFQ

I’ve known the tune for many years but only in bands where I’ve played bass, not melodeon.
It’s an education to find that there’s a version without the accidentals.

taigh na Teud  1998   . the 4 books in this series are well worth having

I have been playing this tune for some time. First discovered it on a CD by John and Sue Kirkpatrick.

Here's my version which was recorded a few years ago.

This may be because of my relatively young age (at least in comparison to the majority of melnetters), but would this have been posted as reference for the tune, I would definitely not have been interested in playing it at all. :D (No intention to insult either the Kirkpatricks or anyone else, of course.)

It's funny and really goes to show how tastes differ! I also first heard this tune from Sue Harris and John Kirkpatrick's recording, and I was excited it won the poll because I really like that track. And I enjoy the hammered dulcimer and the way it creates a sort of shimmering cloud of resonant sound. From a melodeon standpoint, what interested me about this track is how JK plays accompaniment to the dulcimer in three different ways. I think it's a good study for learning that kind of background playing.

I also learned the Rope Waltz first of all from Sue and John's playing on their 1980 recording 'Facing the Music' (Topic Records 12 TS 408). Lovely playing from both of them.

But also I mention it because it was the first John K recording I ever heard, when I was just begining to learn the melodeon and the anglo concertina, and it became highly influential to my style. Definitely worth trying to obtain a copy of it if possible.

interesting that each rendition of the rope waltz on here is  demonstrates a quite different approach to the same tune  which goes to show that there is no such thing as a  ''correct'' version  which to me is the great thing about folk/trad music

Yes - but with the Caveat "First/Second/Third/Fourth Ceilidh Collection for Fiddlers".
Taigh nan Teud also publsh First and Second Ceilidh Collection for Accordian- These are books of tune settings for the PA and the tune selection is also quite different.

Bit off topic- sorry.

No offence to any other contributors, but that is my favourite version so far. I don't like the tune much but I actually like this.
