Sidmouth Steppers have used this tune for ages. I thought it was as well known as Speed the Plough.

Maybe because it’s a Scottish tune and hence not strictly an English Morris tune. But it’s a Polka so popular with NW sides.

North West morris  is not fussy about its tunes being 'English'  . In my morris musician days I played  tunes with a good rhythm including many of Scottish origin  but also things like Madmoiselle from armentiers, rattling bog, in and out the windows,  runaway train, Kelly the boy from Killane etc etc etc.   Its not the origin/nationality of the tune that matters  but any tune that can be played with a good solid (appropriate) rhythm is fine  and ones that the punters can identify with is even better as they hang around longer and put more brass in the tin!

For one dance the Rumworth Morris have a set of four NW tunes - from the NW of Belgium, NW of Italy, NW of Spain, and NW of France.

A tune is 'strictly English morris' if it is used for English morris independent of its origin.

Eynsham March Past - Scottish
Princess Royal - possibly Irish
Theme Vanitese - French
Click Go the Shears - Australian
etc

The Scots may lay claim to it, but like a lot of tunes it's been noted  over a pretty widespread area right across the borders and well into Northumberland.  Small-pipes territory, in fact........

The second tune is From night 'til morn (or The Maid and the Palmer) and the third tune is Salmon Tails.

Somewhere I have a CD recording of Katherine Tickle talking about learning to play Salmon Tails on whistle as a young girl and she has recorded it a number of times on the pipes. Other pipers are available but she is one of my favourites.

I thought Salmon Tails was written by Jamie Allen, the Northumbrian piper. Was he Scottish?

Salmon tails up the water is way beyond the range of Jamie Allen's pipes. He was around long before the smallpipes came into being.
He would have played something akin to the halflongs or lowland pipes.
Surely it's a fiddle tune. It fits very nicely in the usual range of folk fiddlers.
