Bellows binding bending
« on: July 20, 2019, 08:46:38 PM »

Advice please, how to bend the plastic band on old bellows?
I took the bands off around the bellows but need to rebend the corners to match the cut down bellows.
Is it heat and how much, or is it chemical like the case plastic?
I could cut down but this would leave a cut line on the front side.
I cannot see any advice in melnet history search on this.

I have cut down an old paolo soprani 120 bass to normal button accordion size.

Rather than try to bend it, which I think would be nigh on impossible, without a jig to prevent it flaring on the corner, and just the right amount of heat. I would suggest cutting through the straight section at what will become the mid distance between the corners, and then you can make a butt joint, which if neatly done, wouldn't look out of place.

If it is the stuff I’m thinking of - a plastic trim strip that goes round the visible edge of the bellows frame -  the just a bit of gentle heat will enable you to make the bends.  Because it’s a narrow section it won’t stay hot for long, so roughly form all the bends before gluing the strip in place.  And work out careful clamping arrangements before you start applying glue.  It’s easier to to do the gluing one side at a time and allow to set before doing the next side.

a tray of boiling/v hot water can be quite useful for shaping plastic

Ditto a hot air paint stripping gun if used cautiously - in case the glue may be affected by hot water

If the material is the same as plastic guitar binding, there is plenty of information on line and hot water and (careful) heat gun keep coming up.  Hot water woudn't be a problem if the plastic strip is taken to a water pan or whatever (ie bending not done on the box).

I don't see any huge problems in getting the plastic pliable - what would concern me is keeping the U-channel shape as the bends are made. The sides will tend to flare out ......
