Apparently a piece coming up on Front Row (Starts 7.15pm). Possibly just a ploy by Radio 4 to recruit melodeonistas to the listeneratti.

Having been to a day of dance on Saturday I am not suprised they are getting militant.  They were waving sticks in the air much of the time.

Oh no, the next thing we know they will be parading around in the streets with bells and whistles and banjo's  :o

The recent TV program on the Morris ring vote and M & F teams debate seemed to give both sides a fair chance to make their point so there is hope yet for Auntie......

Now we know:
Greg Clarke (Business Secretary) has cancelled May Day next year so England can have VE day instead.
And the Morris men are revolting.
Sounds like a Phyrric Victory to me.

So much of the folk calendar revolves around May Day, and it has seriously put quite a few events awry. When an event is scheduled for what is normally a working day, then they cancel the holiday, which has been an institution for years, then it effs up0 a lot of people. Why can't they add a holiday?

I was wondering that as well.

I think it's political. May Day is, essentially, a celebration of the people. Socialist and working class.

I tend to lean towards cock-up rather than conspiracy here, although I too suspect it's political, in the sense that
some clown of a politician decided (far too late!) that perhaps it would be a good idea to celebrate VE day 'on the
day'. This is an entirely cynical and typically self-interested, self-promotional attempt by politicians to gain brownie
points for their 'patriotism', regardless of any effect it might have on forward-planned events (of all kinds, not just
Morris-related).

I was already aware of the disruption being caused by this shift in date of the Bank Holiday, we were discussing
it in the car on the way home from Bacup t'other week. It's a pity though that the spokesman for t'Morris didn't
make his point more strongly on Front Row last night.

I thought it was interesting (surprising?) that a relatively small town such as Rochester could make as much as
£16m in increased turnover during the holiday weekend.

I heard that this was actually planned some while ago, but only communicated recently. I asked my MP why it could not have been a special holiday, got a fairly useless answer about the effect on industry.

The interview, unfortunately, could have been handled better in my opinion, but I'm not sure how many listeners actually learned about this issue from the broadcast, so there's that.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

It's a classic "It seemed like a good idea at the time, then we learned of the unintended consequences but we're doubling down because we don't really care"

The real problem is the lack of advance warning.
When this was done in 1995, to mark the 50th anniversary of VE day, were warned in 1993 that it was going to happen.
You're right, Eshed, of course. This is a cock up.
i still think that there may be a malicious element in a very right wing government disrupting Labour day.

As people who are (supposedly) interested in tradition, and folk music tradition in particular, I think it's a bit rich to associate May Day celebrations with political stances. I'll be a monkey's uncle if those involved with farming work in the dim and distant past had the slightest inclination of their May Day celebrations ever being usurped by the Communists etc of the far flung (but now fairly recent past) future.

And, whereabouts could we find a "very right wing government" in Great Britain?

Let's keep this a "politics free zone", eh?

Interesting how we seem to be doing well on the radio these days. Last night Hannah James was on Radio 3 In Tune, playing the piano accordions.
