ReedTuning sheet/protocol

When tuning a melodeon you need some kind of protocol.

I think I've seen something useful here - but where?

I normally tune one side of the block to pitch and the other side sharp as per this sheet. The sheet is laid out in Cents.

There are three schemes on the chart one for 'Standard Hohner', a drier set that matches the 'Standard Saltarelle' and a yet drier version which matches 'Standard Castagnari'

These schemes are just the starting point and I then use my ear to sort any oddities.

If you want Viennese tuning you just need to divide the cents offset by two and tune the two sides of the block to plus and minus the new offset.

This web site is a useful resource and goes into a lot of detail around tuning. It’s aimed at PAs but all of it applies to melodeons/diatonic instruments. And check out the 1 bps vs pitch vs cents table. Very handy. I won’t link to the table, so you'll have to go searching for it.

Thanks for your help.

Now I am back from my guitar repair.

it's-  http://www.accordionrevival.com   - that I was looking for.

I have only a simple chromatic tuner,  Clifton mt 40  ( same as Musedo MT-40 )   I have not found any free app tuner that is better.
If I had apple I could have bought peterson - but I don't have apple.

When I measure with my tuner I can see that my tones are about 5 cents over each tone,  (do you call it sharp?)

Therefore, I want a protocol where I measure / calculate

in situ,
in blocks
what needs tuning
after mood
and back in the box.

Peterson is also available for Android.

It is not possible to calculate the difference in pitch in situ, or with the blocks removed.  You can only measure in situ, measure with the block removed and use the difference.   It is much better to do all the measuring and tuning with the blocks in situ in the instrument, it took me some time to discover this, but really it is the only way, and it is not so difficult once you have had some practice and you have some good tools.

If you are findi ng all your reed asre sounding 5 cents sharp, that makes me think your accordion is tuned to A=441Hz.

Peterson for android lacks much of what you can find on the iphone version.

I've checked my toy melodons.  All 4.  In situ.

 Now on to Gessner.
Well,  I have now opened my old Gessner. All the reeds are flat mounted.  Look very nice.

Which "A"  does Gessner use? (a = 429? a = 440? a = 451?)
The tuning is all over the place.

Dont worry,  . . .I'm just checking, I'm not tuning. Yet.   :)

If it's an old melodeon, maybe it was not tuned to equal temperament.

What is the bass tuned to? When the treble is all over the place check the bass reeds.

If you want to be absolutely historically correct with your instrument's tuning, then I would think Roger's suggestion will get you close to an answer; however, if you intend it to be played with other instruments, then the significant reference note will be whatever they're tuned to - most likely A=440 or thereabouts. My little Hlavacek is significantly adrift from modern tuning, but it sounds so sweet I decided to leave it where it is, and simply not play it with anything else - at least not live!
