Tune of the Month for August 2019: Tripping Upstairs
« on: July 31, 2019, 09:49:03 PM »

Oops! Serves me right for not checking we've done this before! So here we go, a rerun of Tripping Upstairs...

Here's a nice clean closeup version from Paul Young: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zfsTxvm3yU

... and of course, here's the original thread! http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,21943.0.html

Off we go again; off to come up with another version of it!

Cheers,

Clive

I thought never mind , I'll just play it in another key...then looked at my original post where it merges seamlessly ( >:E >:E >:E) from G to A to C to D...
Might be hard work on the Bb... :|glug

the new one: https://youtu.be/NV2KjxgEhuM

hopefully different from MArch 2018: https://youtu.be/Mkg6KELHNyg

I suspect coffee had been consumed in March 2018!

The new  video has a fresh 4 stop take, and a C/F (in F) take, so moving most of the melody to the inside row.

All the best

I am eternally grateful to this ToTM for introducing me to Tony Hall and Fieldvole.
Not sure what I can do with it, that I didn't do first time around-unless I emphasise the Bm chord more, Fred  ;D

Last time round my take was fairly straight, like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BruCuOwXoY

So this time, I've tried it as a fastish hornpipe, which makes (to my ear anyway) more musical sense than I expected.

On a Castagnari Mory in D/G, so we're in the normal key of D, if not the normal timing.

I decided to do something of a synchopated thing with the tune. Really I was just having fun and liked what came out. In deference to the authentic item, I'm calling it "Tripping Up Tripping Up Up the Stairs." Enjoy

I regularly have my own workshop. Sometimes I need a metronome because I speed up. And for that I use the keyboard with different kinds of rhythms. And with that I practiced  “tripping up the stairs”. In the end, I personally think the "bossa" version is the best.  It is all in 4/4 in stead of 6/8. This video shows how I enjoy making music in the chaos with all microphones, instruments, cables, cameras, headphones. I play the Brandoni A/D

Wow. That is so funky. No idea which is the "bossa" version, but they're all great fun.

I believe that would be the last one of the series, the one that starts at about 2:09. Text does slowly flash up saying as such, but it is mostly an 'audio' experience - I'll readily admit I looked away from the video while enjoying the audio. Also, I agree, makes me want to dig out the keyboard and have a whirl myself.

Hi all! Here's my contribution to this month's tune, interpreted in terms of the title.

Hello!

Tripping Upstairs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp3hHyHHxhw

Last time, I submitted an audio only version of this tune as I couldn't quite get a single take together, and instead ended up editing a couple of different takes of audio together. Given the situation, I figured I should take another punt at it! I was getting into experimenting with arrangements when this rolled around the first time, and rather bit off more than I could chew. The arrangement I play here is roughly the same as last time, and still a little bit much, really, and something I mostly just play for a bit of fun or at the Folk Club. The First A and B are 'played straight', the 2nd A is taken from Sandy's playing but is apparently from a performance by Tony Hall, the 2nd B is me trying to figure out places to take this part of the music and my attempts at 'faking' an F#m chord, the 3rd A is per mostly per Sandy's playing and the 3rd B a simple variation which many people I know tend to prefer in general. Final A is just me being silly again (with 1 bum note!), taking the melody all the way up to the top and writing a fun little ending.

Tripping Upstairs became quite the favourite tune for me to play with my other half, so, hopefully we will continue to arrange it in dubious fashion together, rather than use it as an excuse for me to show off how much time I had on my hands.

Stop configuration:
3 voice: on
Low Bass Fundamental: off
Chord Thirds: on

Also included: A bicycle phone mount which I use to hold my Phone on top of my instrument so I can monitor tempo safely again. It's far too close to read anything but giant text on, though.

Hi all! Here's my contribution to this month's tune, interpreted in terms of the title.

There is something oddly pleasing about this. Hmm!

Did someone say "late contributions"? :-)

It's interesting to hear how much my playing has improved since March 2018 when I recorded it for the first and so far last time.

This is a tune I knew well, but never bothered to get up to standard to lead.
Being TotM I did have a good go although I haven't recorded it (or anything at all until sort out mikes) but it proved useful today. One jig was needed to finish off a session and there it was at my fingertips.
Thank you Melnet. Thank you TotM.
