RIP cumbia legend Celso Piña
« on: August 22, 2019, 09:33:19 PM »

Yesterday, Mexican cumbia legend Celso Piña passed away unexpectedly.
Celso was an incredibly popular accordionist from one of the poorest barrios in the city of Monterrey, in the north of the country.
Celso learnt to play cumbia and vallenato - styles from Colombia - and helped make them popular in Mexico, the U.S. and beyond. A true pioneer, he often collaborated with other artists, blending his 'cumbia regiomontana' with hip hop, reggae and norteño styles.
He played for the first time in the UK in London in April this year.
He will be greatly missed.

RIP, he seemed like such a cool person in all of his interviews. He was nicknamed ‘El Rebelde del Acordeon’ (The Rebel of the Accordion) in Mexico because when he was starting out no body in Mexico really knew what Cumbia and Vallenato were and have only ever heard the accordion in Norteño/Polka style music. Basically, they thought the way he played the accordion was weird, but eventually Cumbia caught on and became popular in Mexico.
