Special delivery from Germany
« on: August 29, 2019, 08:27:23 PM »

A friend in Germany was looking out for some interesting instruments for me and this little package arrived today.
The Preciosas play wonderfully though I expect they are in 435 pitch. The Club II is in bits really and might turn out to be a donor box. All are still in original club configuration, as you might expect.
I have a few other project boxes underway so these can lurk in the background, mocking me.
I thought Liliputs were small but these are minute! I haven't delved inside yet.

You would seem to have "it" quite badly, Squeaky!

Wow, congrats!

btw, if it's not just the perspective, the 2.3 preciosa is visibly smaller than the 2.4 one.
I wonder what the differences in weight and playability are.

I don't think there's any difference in any dimension or weight. It's an optical illusion. They feel exactly the same to play.
I've not even quite got used to the size of a Liliput yet but at least the button spacing is exactly the same,

Preciosa is smaller than Liliput.  Not much difference in weight though.

What is the button spacing on a Liliput?

20mm c/c is the button spacing on all the Hohners I have except for my (Pre 1930) AD, which has an 18mm c/c button spacing.

Congratulations! :||:

I contemplated having mine retuned to 440, but somehow 435 suits them.

Thanks....and so much for my innocent belief that Hohner used a standard button spacing for (almost) everything.

The gold one has 4 buttons on the helper row and the ginger one has only 3, but the ginger one looks slightly more sophisticated. For example it has the pattern continued along the outside edge of the fingerboard whereas the gold one has a black painted edge.
Was there any logic to 3 or 4 button? Is one significantly earlier (same grille pattern)?

Maybe check the serial numbers?
On my preciosa it's stamped (barely visible) on the lower rear (the part that touches your belly) of the bass side.

I can find no trace of a serial number on the ginger one, though I have found a CF stamp.
The gold one is 329500 helpfully stamped across the black line where the celluloid is joined. There is no CF stamp on this one.
Presumably serial numbers run across all Hohners. So a Student PA may have the next number after a Liliput?

I suspect that at the very least Liliputs and Preciosas shared numbers. I don't know about other models.

Accordians of all sorts,  indeed any bellows driven instrument will often appear to vary slightly in size due to the amount of compression/stretching the bellows has undergone in its life, particularly if the check straps have also been allowed to stretch or the bellow has been replaced at some time. I have had similar models which vary by as much as 1" until the bellows are fully compressed,  even then there are small variations.

That doesn’t change the size of the case though and the two models Liliput and Preciosa are measurably different is size, so the answer is simple to lay a ruler on them.

Mind you the Preciosa is a bit different from the usual with only three buttons on the helper row.  There are usually four, though I have also seen one with just two rows.

I've have a good poke about inside the ginger one. It has been recently refurbished to a high standard, unfortunately it is still in old pitch. I don't really fancy stripping all the recently revalved and waxed work, cleaning it off, then redoing it all.
Is bringing it up to concert pitch feasible with all the reeds in situ? I will have to remove and refit a few reed plates anyway, but the majority can stay
