Automatic Key Change Melodeon
« on: September 15, 2009, 01:04:01 PM »

As we all know many of you all have different boxes to play various music, why cant they invent a melodeon that can play in different keys just by a  lever, a handle or button attached that can change from B/C to a D/G etc.instead of having two or three or more melodeons

Could it be possible for an invention for 22nd Century

You could do it yourself with a 2 voicer with stops. It would mean stripping out one set of reeds and replacing say a D/G set with a C/F. I suspect a more adventurous replacement, say F/Bb might compromise tone ..

..But nothing so much as the effect of playing accidentally or otherwise with both sets of reeds engaged!  Left hand perhaps more tricky. You should be able to do something on a 12 bass, but it wouldn't be in standard configuration for one of your 'voices'

.. now back to my standard day job of redesigning the camel.

have seen it done with 4 single voice keys on a 1 row 4 stop CGDA I think.  Very effective but obviously melody only as the economical 2 bass would be hard pressed to cope!

You can play in any key you want on a B/C.  No need for fancy key changers, just use the both rows! Full chromatic scale right there.

Automatic sounds lazy to me

Sound like a job for a B/C/C# with stradella bass George.

And isn't part of the charm of a melodeon the fact that it's limited?
If you wnt to play in lots of keys you should buy a piano accordian!  (:)

There was previously a discussion about this, and more specific the Falcon cajun melodeon:

6 voice box with 3 sets of reeds in C and 3 sets in D - the bass side has a switch to change key.

But the extra weight of the non-playing reeds would be enough to put me off...

John,

I sometimes mention that I have a box by Anthony Faas of Philadelphia that converts from C/F to C/B, by moving a lever on the back of the keyboard.

But it was already invented in the 19th century and is included in the first US accordion patent (United States Patent  11,062) of 1854.
