Theme for the Month for September 2019: Jigs

Nice simple theme this month; jigs. Maybe a slipjig too if you fancy? As usual, anything goes! :-)

We were going to put these on YouTube anyway, but since they are in 6/8 time and should therefore qualify as jigs, I might as well post a link here:
The Speaking Figure and Chelmsford Assembly played by me with Mary Humphreys on concertina.

Following a little chat on another thread, Tone Dumb Greg of this parish and I have been discussing Old Noll's Jig.
He knows it from Horslips, I know it from the Banquet of Boxes cd, played superbly by Nick Cooke.
I'm not as accomplished as Mr. Cooke, but I keep coming back to it as it fits into my 'Bonkers tunes' category which I enjoy.
Here's my take on it, with added surplus notes for realism  ;)

I'm a bit musically illiterate when it comes to styles of traditional music, so I decided to look up the definition of a Jig in some of the musical theory/history books of my partner. While interesting to read about the theoretical definitions and also definitely interesting to listen to some more classical arrangements (Bach, Telemann, etc.), I still wasn't convinced that I would really like to play such kind of music. Or even that I would be able to learn those melodies which quite frankly all sound like etudes to me...

So I decided to search a bit more and find something that
- will teach me some new fingerings,
- sounds a bit like an 18th century Gigue,
- and is pleasant to listen to.

I've reached the conclusion that this Gigue will fulfill all of these checkpoints:

Code: [Select]

T:Gigue ur Magnus Theorins notbok

|:geg geg|fga aaa|geg geg|fga aaa|

Now I'll be off again to practice this some more because so far I haven't really put in a lot of time or effort to learn it. Time will tell at which point I deem it record-worthy. (:)

Hexham Quadrille, a couple of times through straightforwardly, then as a Morris (double?) Jig including slows. Imperfect in places but an enjoyable tune and a useful 48 bar jig. It turned up in a local session a few months ago and has been sitting in the 'to try' pile.

As I needed to post a recording of my Dino Super 3 (up for sale) here is an Italian contribution - Sbrando 'Smarlon'
https://youtu.be/rymVkVvCI_8

One take only so not great quality. Somehow I think the tune title might not be traditional... (:)

Here's a couple of jigs I've just learnt from Andy Hornby's book 'The Winders of Wyresdale'. The tunes are both attributed to H.S. Jackson, whose book was found amongst the Winder family's collection. I attended Andy's presentation at ECMW this year and my son kindly bought the book for my birthday. Slowly going through it. I've not heard the first tune before, though it may appear somewhere under a different title (I've no idea what this title is supposed to mean).  There are a couple of versions of Neopolitan Threshers on YT though again it was new to me. I play Fanny Lisp in Bb as in the book but have changed Neopolitan Threshers from D to C simply for convenience. A bit rough in places, but here it is:

I have set myself an easily missable target.....a tune I have wanted to learn for fifty years.

I'll admit what it is if/when I think it will be recognisable to others.

They're threshers from Naples, aren't they?  Oh, no, that's the second tune. Oh. I see. Erm, very nicely played, though. The chords for the B part of Fanny Mild Speech Impediment are interesting. How are your top button basses tuned?

Here's a couple of straight down the line 32 bar jigs, as played in my Milton Keynes based barndance / ceilidh band for weddings, parties and corporate events (Google food!), Pamplemousse www.pamplemousseband.co.uk

We have the Hogmanay Jig, by scottish accordionist Andrew Rankine (I think this came off an old All Blacked Up album, didn't it?) and Jump at the Sun by maestro John Kirkpatrick. Jump at the Sun (my version anyway) relies on a Bb accidental on the pull - not saying you can't do it with one on the push, but it's easier on the pull. This tune influences the accidental layout of all my melodeons!

In this case, played on the Saltarelle Elfique in D/G.

You're too kind sir...we did indeed play it (and still do in our Ironmasters incarnation...) but we pinched it off The New Victory Band's One More Dance and Then...

Cracking tune (and lovely playing...) :|glug

Baz, at least I have a name to chase for the dots!
Just one of those tunes that keeps popping out, I get through it in a session, then promptly forget it until the next time someone plays it.
Didn't realise it was from the New Victory lp. One that happened before I became aware and saw the light.....
One day I'll give it a listen if I can find it!.
