Believe it or not, and despite what the description on this group says (still not updated it!), Tune of the Month is 10 years old this month! So in celebration, this month pick a tune of the month that you haven't played before, and give it a whirl! They're all listed in Lester's list, here in column B of this spreadsheet.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oAAqmdNlsk1qRfQbf0ldR0m408Npkqa6ra9okoZIUlY/edit#gid=0

That's a lot of tunes. And I'm pretty sure nobody has recorded them all, other than me. So... you all have a great big list of material to choose from, together with threads with several different interpretations of each for inspiration!

Not quite sure what I'll do though; I've already done them all, so I'll redo one with a different interpretation to what I did first time round perhaps.

Cheers,

Clive

I joined melnet and first posted in November 2010, so missed this TotM from April of that year. I have also posted some of the pre-dating tunes previously  under 'Theme', or just for fun.

I just got around to listening to this. A unique take on the tune. I can't quite work out what it is, but it sounds great.

Because of my suggestion " the tune of the month: Leyas Vaggvisa" was chosen I decided to play an old tune of the month: the Cheshire waltz. My only problem is the acceleration :Ph

I've been practicing that one for almost the entire time I've been playing, still far from done.
This video was taken in the basement of a friend who knows his recording and mixing. Even though the second time through had some severe fumbles, we thought the overall groove was worth keeping the take.
Lots of thanks go to Pierre-Emmanuel of this parish and the other wonderful versions of this tune.

P.S. the chords in the beginning were just random stuff between takes, but my friend demanded that they remain.

Interesting that the things you perceive as stumbles are, in reality,  totally insignificant. I agree with P&T. Masterful.

Big smiles from me listening to that one, Eshed! :|glug

Janneke, I liked the multitracking; I haven't worked up the nerve to try something like that myself!

Magnificent. Robust rhythm, rich harmonies - just glorious!

Great sound too, which had me looking up the price of those Oktava mics and wondering about trying that widely spaced mic arrangement myself.

Thank you all! Means quite a lot to me (:)

@anahata My friend had another microphone pointed to a corner of a room which was passed through a very short reverb and only the reverb signal was mixed into the two other mics.

Thank you! The most difficult part is the mix of the tracks. Now listening again, I hear 2e and 3e voice too loud and messy. It's not a good balance. In the last parts it went better and then you can recognise the beat. I'm a real amateur :||:

I've recorded everything already of course :-)

So here's another take at Bonny Kate, which I think makes a lovely jig. My violin playing friend disagrees wildly, but he's not here!

Played on a venerable Hohner Club I in C/F.

Cheers,

William and Nancy (Tune of the Month from September 2014): https://youtu.be/_dNay15i3g8

I think this is my very favorite Morris tune, or at least it is one of the ones that grabbed me when I first heard it and made me want to learn to play the melodeon. I was doggedly determined to play through the entire music for the dance (which makes it the longest recording I have yet pulled off). It's a bit "warts and all", and there are some panicky, flailing moments in the slows, but I hope I managed to summon enough verve to do it some justice regardless. Mostly I was just chuffed to get through a three minute tune without spontaneously combusting.
