Conor Connolly Irish accordion workshop in London 27 Oct
« on: October 13, 2019, 10:51:51 AM »

A rare opportunity in the UK.

Conor Connolly is a wonderful box player from Galway, inspired by the great Joe Cooley, who won the "Young Musician of the Year" Gradam Ceoil award earlier this year. He plays C#/D, much of which is translatable onto the D row of a D/G.

"Very conscious of the musicians and music gone before him, he holds a great appreciation for the recordings of traditional Irish music from the 78 r.p.m era and beyond. The influence of the uilleann pipes and fiddle traditions is discernible in his music. Conor has played and taught the accordion at many festivals at home and abroad."

He's appearing at, and doing a workshop at, the Return to London Irish festival 25-27 October 2019.

I didn't know he is a C#/D player !

Mrs Boxhead and I are going to one of his workshops this Wednesday, we have been looking forward to it very much, however we are both B/C players.

I am sure there is still much we could learn though.

I shan't be able to attend... :(  but thank you for posting the interview clip, Katie. That led me to a couple of others including this one of his performance at the Gradam awards.

A likeable young man, and what a great player! Tony MacMahon but carefree - exuberance in place of brooding. I feel like getting my boxes tuned soaking wet now.

Conor's workshop was great, he was friendly and relaxed, and the fact we were both on b/c was not a problem to him. He definitely showed us both some good pointers on how we could play more efficiently. He could quickly read our fingering and offer advice on improving our technique. I had never taken an accordion lesson before so was a bit nervous at first but it all went fine. I wish I could have picked his brains for a bit longer really.
