Dear All,
Out of the fingers of a friend came the tune we called 'The Waltz that carried me to my grave' and nicknamed 'The Shagging Waltz' at our monthly session a few weeks back. I used to play it on concertina but it's left my brain after ~ 20-30 years though I seemed to join in with it on melodeon.

Well, I've googled 'The Waltz that carried me to my grave' and found it was the first Louisiana / Cajun song to be recorded by Jo Fallon in 1928, and is *not* the tune I'm thinking of.
Digging around I've found the same title on an lp of 'Buttons and Bows, a celebration of British tunes' the track by the Hooligan Band from 1982 ish. I might even have it somewhere, but no longer a method of playing vinyl even if I found it.

Has anyone a digital recording or abc/dots for this tune set?
Yours in hope

I don't have a copy, but I do have a USB record deck you can borrow, if we can work out a way to get it to you.

George, I have no idea about the nickname, but the Hooligsn Band might!
Thanks Greg that is a most kind offer. If I can find it, I'll be in touch!
Cheers

Um.....
For purposes of decorum and Proper Forum Etiquette I must explain there are various forms of Shag, an American type of dance. Google tells me the Carolina Shag was the first, and they are now officially recognised as forms of dance.
The Shagging Waltz is obviously a form of this dance.
Obviously.

I have no other explanation to give  ::)
...for the defence m'lud.

And there was me thinking it was about a birdwatching trip. I must have mixed it up with a cormorant.

The name might be a result of the same process that changed the name of The Flagon Reel to the Flogging Reel.  It may have started as The Shogun Waltz

"The Common
Cormorant"

The common cormorant (or shag)
Lays eggs inside a paper bag,
You follow the idea, no doubt?
It's to keep the lightning out.

But what these unobservant birds
Have never thought of, is that herds
Of wandering bears might come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.

The Cormerant and Shag are two different species, though often confused especially in juveniles. Down here the blacker Shag is often seen drying their wings in a loose 'M' shape on rocks along the coast.

Back to the question:
At morris practice last night I chatted to one if my musician friends. She remembers back in the mid '80's when we regularly played the tune and confirms it was from the 'Buttons and Bows' lp so the Hooligan Band is the source.
I remember playing the lp as I learnt another tune on the compilation lp. I think I must have borrowed it as it is not in my box of lp's.

Therefore the quest for a version of the tune ( dots, abc,
midi ) remains!

Flagon Reel > Flogging Reel.....I have seen (on the net) a version of "Byker Hill and Walker Shore" (which always struck me as a variant on Cwm Rhonndda) titled "Byker Hill and Walk Ashore".

And up here the bird in question is "Sgarbh" .... I am told there is a recipe for "Brochan Sgarbh". It is unlikely to ever win the golden spurtle for speciality porridge.

Carry on with your breakfast boys (and girls).

The vinyl LP is available for £6 plus postage (seems to be a double LP set).

[As I said, you are welcome to borrow my usb deck, mind you, they are available for less than £50, these days.

I bought my deck planning to convert my old record collection, only to discover that it was hard to hear the tunes, for the bacon frying. It's spent 15 years, or so, under my bed.]

Greg, you're working well, thank you for digging!
Yes, I too have wondered about a deck and a while back did had a part ownership with a bunch of friends to do exactly as you say - convert all those unusual lp's into digital.
We too discovered it is hard work to do and the results poor  :-\
I think the deck is lost in an attack somewhere...

Just hoped a Melnetter might have notated it somewhere.
It might turn up yet

I quite liked the look of the album and it's cheap, so I'm buying it. All being well, I'll digitise it.

I do remember it was good, but it was in the mid '80's!

Winston. There is a thing where the worms were correct when they left the brain, but by the time it gets to the fingers they piskies corrupt them. That's the trouble with living here.... piskies!
That's my excuse  ;D

Strange things happen in your part of the world. I overnighted on a farm campsite once. We were the only guests. The farmer called on us at dusk, to make sure everything was alright. There were strange noises coming from a barn. When the farmer saw me looking in that direction he said said "don't worry. It's just my son practicing with his chainsaw." We spent a nervous night.
