Wanted: aged celluloid/plastic key tops
« on: October 18, 2019, 07:17:09 PM »

Long shot this. I am looking for keytop material that looks similar to the picture in the link, which is the instrument I am being asked to repair. Similar yellowy aged look. It doesn’t matter if the size is wrong i can hack it back together somehow. If you have an accordion laying around, all busted up and wishing you'd just put it out of its misery and throw it in the skip, then I might be interested. In fact if you want to keep the bellows and reeds and just sell me the keyboard/keys, I am interested. But it’s on a short timeframe so I need to find something in the next week. BTW the instrument is an Alvari Italia. There is a Casali on eBay with similar keys. I watching it... ;D

NB...only serious and relevant replies on this thread please...thanks.

I have an old, dead Alvari.
The keys are not pristine white but they don't look yellow enough for you.

It’s a sort of yellowy/ivory colour, translucent. I think this looks quite close..

But someone has bid on it...(not me)

Would it be easier to find a nice white key than a yellow one and swop the lot?

Thanks for the suggestion. I had not considered the idea. But it’s unlikely I’d get the right size. While I’m prepared to make one key top I’m not so sure about the 20 or so on there....but perhaps I should think about that.

Wouldn't some kind of natural stain or chemical darken old keys?
Ammonia fumes darken oak and many other timbers, maybe something will affect the celluloid?

I checked my old PA's, and they could be the right sort of colour, but the Casali on eBay has the right striped effect.

Oh...yes that does look sort of right, though a bit on the light side. But as you point out Nick..they won’t ship ...but...there is some on eBay.uk. Well done tirpous (and Nick) for pointing that out. I had no idea until now that this stuff existed. I'll have to switch topics now to ask about darkening celluloid...
