Tune of the Month for November 2019: Derriere les Carreaux
« on: October 31, 2019, 10:16:43 PM »

I hope that you don't mind me closing the poll a little early for my own convenience - I think we have a clear winner!

Derriere les Carreaux - great Fred Paris schottische, here played by Paul Young: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYm8iDdHez0

Thanks to Pete and Helena, here's some D/G friendly ABC which pitches it in Dm (normally I would play this on a C/F for it to come out in D minor)

Code: [Select]
X: 86
T:Derriere les Carreaux
M:2/2
L:1/8
C:Frederic Paris
R:Schottische
K:Eminor

If some kind soul could turn this into a pdf for me of sheet music - while I remind myself how to do that, it would be very helpful. EDIT - just noticed that a very kind fellow called CliveW has a site to do just that, so no need to bother.

P&T (and anyone else who doesn't want to use abc directly)

Here's a great abc converter that will create a pdf for you.

Bit confused by the pdf...but too early for me to get a box out to remind myself how I play it - aren't there some c sharps somewhere ? The pdf only shows c naturals...

Yes - you are right Julian. In the B-music, the C naturals shown in both Clive's ABC and Greg's PDF should be C# - at least that's the way Paul Young is playing it. Here are some other versions which have C# (or transposed equivalents) in the B-music.

The last is by La Chavannee, so ought to be authentic.

My French isn't that good so I translate the title as "Behind the Tiles". Is this a slang term for something in French? Perhaps Fred Paris trained as a plasterer? A comment on the Windows 10 GUI?

Whoops, sorry.  My musically illiterate brain didn't clock that. I've had the abc in my library for some time so can't recall where it came from. I never got round to tackling the tune and only looked at it briefly this week.  My ears obviously know how it goes though as I was playing C# in the B music.

Apologies. I just rendered the dots that were there. I have removed them to reduce confusion.

Carreaux also means "window panes", a more likely meaning.

Thanks for that link to the La Chavannée recording. I very much enjoyed its groove and I'll strive for a recording close to its feeling.
I've decided for myself that the tune sounds great (maybe even best) in Dmin, just like in the La Chavannée record. Sits nicely on my G/C and I'll try to spice the tune up with a few extra bass notes (finally a reason to properly learn how to play my 14 basses :D ).

I guess it's play on "Derrière les Barreaux" -  "Behind Bars".
