Having just spent the best part of an hour recording and discarding versions I am full of admiration of all who have posted !
I know it is easy to be over critical of ones own playing but I am getting thoroughly depressed at how bad a tune I think I know very well can sound when I record it. So many errors, particularly rushing notes - and inevitably speeding up. Very irritating ! Definitely time for the metronome.

Better bellows control, more row crossing to smooth it out definitely neededYou’re being hard on yourself. Great first outing! The bellows control thing will suddenly ‘click’ and fix itself some day.  Though there are a few past threads here on that issue that have lots of useful suggestions. Or so I found.

Good advice, which reflects my experience frequently.

I have lower expectations. Makes for a happier existence. Julian, you are one of the most secure players here, so spare a thought for the rest of us.

Mine as well.  A Norwegian friend characterized such time-based objectivity as "letting it ripen".

Definitely like the idea of letting it ripen. Might just try doing a recording after a couple of glasses and some mature Epoisses fromage ! Bound to improve the playing...  >:E

I've found that if I record s l o w l y , I'm more likely to find the groove and establish a rock-steady tempo.  Once found, it's possible to take the tempo up while keeping the feeling intact and avoid the speeding problem.  Personally, I find it necessary to have worked up the tune in a manner in which the bellows (both breathing and dynamics) is comfortable enough that I'm "bellows surfing" rather than "bellows wrestling".

Here's my attempt - not quite rock steady, but I'm reasonably happy with it. Apologies for middling sound quality and slightly out-of-tune box!

This is my first contribution to TOTM, and my first tune I had to figure the bass accompaniment out for myself. I would love to learn how to make the bass line a bit fancier, but I'm afraid I'm not quite there yet. All feedback welcome!

Well played, nice and secure. I don't think there's any need for critical feedback - it's clearly competent and a good reflection of your progress so far.

Kon, very well done, it sounds like you’re making excellent progress. As I’m sure most people who’ve given this a go will probably agree, this tune is trickier than it looks or sounds and keeping the tempo stable is particularly tricky. I think you’ve done very well on both counts and it was lovely to hear, thanks for posting!

Hi Kon. The quality is not surprising - you were a natural player when you started to play the box. So, nice playing and...nice box.  (:)

Thanks for the encouraging comments P&T, Vicky and Nigel!

And yes, it is a nice box, thanks Nigel! I'm still very happy with it. I'll get it tuned soon, there is one note on the G row in particular that has drifted a little bit off course, but it hasn't tempered my enjoyment playing at all - especially as it's in such good shape mechanically.

I'm really enjoying all your submissions for this one - and I do love the tune. I'm going to make a recording myself but it will probably be a late submission, I found my dream box recently and I want to use that but just now it's off at the melodeon hospital until at least next weekend.

Keep 'em coming guys.

At long last I recorded a version I was at least partly happy with - but the tune I paired it with didn't pass muster ! Grrr.
I don't think I have ever spent so much time working on a tune - not so much with the aim of 'get it xxxxxxx right' but as a vehicle to overcome basic flaws in my playing. Whether I can apply this learning more generally is another matter of course...
One more attempt to do better ( perhaps )

Here we go; here's my take

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U89EBcklOC0

Played on a Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb (on the inside row, so we're in F minor).

I've been playing this tune for so long, I found it quite hard to do a different take on it - for the curious, I've already recorded my typical way of playing it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5_-ZfY38gs

That was recorded 8 years ago, and my standard way of playing it hasn't really changed at all (gosh!). Hence the new version - not completely convinced, but it might be an interesting starting point.

Cheers,

Clive

What a great variety of performances so far! I have just spent the last three months moving, and it's great to start sorting out the music again. Here's one more to the batch...https://youtu.be/SOOiu6p82D8
