I agree with George - having tried a variety of boxes, I find the Lilly an excellent box for rapper, although the Mons Meg clip referred to shows a Baffetti Carnival played 'pretty fast, with basses'.

There's been a more-or-less uninterrupted supply of rapper in Scotland for decades. The beginnings of Mons Meg overlapped with the last Days of Clydeside Rapper. Clydeside began practising in Glasgow in 1986 with rappers borrowed from Beltane Rapper (Edinburgh), who were coming to an end at that time. There might be others here who can say when Beltane started. Banchory Ternan did some rapper as well.

The young bloke playing the Baffetti for Mons Meg in that video is quite an impressive player. Does anyone know who he is?

Yes, he's my son, James, currently living in Hamburg and missing the English and Scottish folk scenes.

I bet you're proud of him!
BTW I've enjoyed some nice Irish sessions in Hamburg, and no doubt James has checked them out already.

Thank goodness for that, I thought my old eyes were playing up. I was convinced it was James but thought, well if it was surely Andrew would have mentioned it in his previous post.

...and I checked with Chloe's mother. It is her playing the fiddle and the announcer is her partner, Andy, also of the Kingsmen. Couple of rapper tarts. I, also, thought my old eyes were playing up.

It's a small world, the folk dancing one.

It is indeed a small world - also in the Mons Meg set are Trina McKendrick and Kev Theaker, who take some excellent photos and make some great videos of traditional dance, including this one which also features Andy the alleged "rapper tart" in close-up : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XeLrwyqTunQ
(But tart is not the right word for a dancer who is so committed and competent)

The world gets smaller.
I hadn't looked at the Mons Meg set till now.
Yes I recognise Kev Theaker.
He used to dance with us when he was here in Exeter and I've danced Cotswold with him when he was a member of our side!
I remember seeing him a little while back and he said he'd moved over to rapper from morris.
The world has just shrunk again!

It's a good description of a couple of people who are members of at least 3 different sides.

Better Ranter tart than pop tart. That's the promise of pudding, but the reality of burnt mouth.

… looking at recent Folk festival, most of the Morris sides had more “musicians” than dancers! 🤔

Tart is the perfect term.  Generally used to describe anyone who is in three or more sides.  Tarts are generally the most committed and often the most capable as a result.  Some sides are made up almost entirely, or even entirely, of tarts.

What an eye opener. I will now watch the dancers in a different light as I try to spot the tart. Reminds me of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_w32dZTj8o

Yep, agree with Helena, and it is usually said with affection and not deemed derogatory in my book.

Yes, I have to wholeheartedly agree with the principle too - I'm just not that keen on the term "tart", so I will have to try to think of it with affection >:E
Many teams and traditions would have fallen away without the tarts, and without the tarts lots of dance-outs would not be possible.  I admire the dancing tarts in particular because some of them are able to memorise so many different dances, and in some cases traditions too.

Yes Stotty, they often bolster numbers in sides and are much valued.
