Thanks Ian good points there, well made.
I did carefully avoid the material question!

Thanks Theo. I wish I’d had you teaching me physics when I was at school. Like most of physics, it’s an elegant amalgam of maths and the real world. I was lucky enough to work at the Institute of Physics for a year a while ago. What a great bunch of people. I worked with people who's job it was to go into schools and teach non Physics grad 'science' teachers how to teach physics. My colleague would arrive in the morning with this big yellow bag. 'Wanna see some physics?' He'd ask, then show me maybe the world's simplest electric motor, or some other strange physical phenomenon.

I don't think this is a matter of mathematics at all!  If you could play on the row  then you are reliant on balance within the tune to keep your bellows in a comfortable central position. It was ever thus ...

If you play the Continental style then most of the musical  phrases are on the pulll, particularly if you are not playing in the home key of your instrument.  The main issue in that situation is the quality of your  air valve, and ability to collapse over-expanded bellows … fairly quickly

Yes "size matters", but this is very much more the case in cross-rowing style where ... you can run out of left arm in :-\some tunes  :o  Worse if you are improvising

As over we back to "it depends how you play" but I would recommend good quality, capacious bellows to any melodeon player investing in a new box.

He/she should also looks assiduously to the quality of the air valve. In my opinion the most important button, on any button box

Yep, good point Chris.
The air button is so important, the throttle on the engine!

Good responsive reeds + big bellows work for me! Bad reeds requiring too much air will be disastrous with small bellows yet can perform acceptably with more available air. Your mileage may vary 😁
