Tune of the Month for December 2019: Hunt the Squirrel
« on: December 01, 2019, 07:24:14 AM »

Hurrah! This tune finally won! One of my favourites!

Hunt the Squirrel  - a 32 bar straight down the line jig - here played by Saul Bailey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idZawIDMafs

Lester's put some ABC on his website here, along with a video of him playing it:

https://lesters-tune-a-day.blogspot.com/2013/06/tune-292-hunt-squirrel.html

Enjoy and happy Christmas!

Very nicely played, as always.
The contrast between the boxes and your arrangements is really interesting.

I recall there is more than one tune called Hunt the Squirrel...is it breaking the rules if we choose another ?

I know of at least three other versions (a Morris dance tune, a version of this sped up as a hornpipe, and a version that reminds me of The Keel Row) and I think they are all derived from this original at varying distances. This version comes directly from Playford, I believe.

Thank you Lester. Knew I'd heard it somewhere. Couldn't place ti. That's another feature of dance tunes though. They aren't always what it says on the tin.

Hunt(ing) The Squirrel. One of John Locke's tunes, and the last tune I danced to at a Shropshire Bedlams practice 20 or so years ago...I did my Achilles Tendon in mid - dance finally putting paid to my Morris dancing years. :-[
Complete with clackety buttons !

Hope the link works, don't seem to be able to upload to Youtube any more.
Next up, the Jig

Here's my version, played in C on the Hohner Liliput G/C conversion by Kay Albrecht.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhUBo-BcAEc

Straight down the line version, I would say. Normally I'd play this in D, but I'm rather loving this box at the moment.

Cheers,

Clive

Here's mine:

https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/20191210-hunt-the-squirrel

Played in C on Pariselle G/C workshop box

Little hickup on third way through. But maybe I was just catering to the more natural approach to recording that some melnet users prefer. ;-)

What hiccup?
More natural = more interesting to listen to and the variations are  great.
All good.
