Two Versions of Hunt The Squirrel, both from Playford's Dancing Master.

Edit: the first one is from Playford, the second one probably isn't (as discussed below)

Two Versions of Hunt The Squirrel, both from Playford's Dancing Master.

Do you have a link or reference in Playford for the second version (the hornpipe)? That's the version I am working on for this month. I have it from Cecil Sharp's "Country Dance Tunes" published in 1909 and didn't realize it also went back to Playford like the "original" (which was first published in Walsh's "Compleat Country Dancing Master" IIRC before appearing in a later edition of Playford).

Folktunefinder.com has it, and gives this as a source:
http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/mirror/home.quicknet.nl/england.abc
The original link, of which that is a mirror, is also listed on the folktunefinder page but is dead now.
It's a big file of which I have had a copy for years.
The headers claim Playford in the ABC which I've copied below.

I have to say that rhythms like this are unusual in Playford, so that may be completely wrong.

Edited to add: I've now changed the description on the video, back-pedalling firmly on the Playford claim.

Masterful playing from Anahata, as we would expect, thank you! Mind you, to my untrained ear, they sound like two entirely different tunes. I do like the first, and most commonly played, in this thread. In fact, I like it so much I may even have a go myself!

Thanks. I asked because I can only find the jig version (although originally notated in 6/4!) in Playford. This site - http://playforddances.com/dances/ - claims to consolidate every edition of Playford and only has the one version.

Here's the Cecil Sharp version of the hornpipe (see page 10 of Set #2): https://imslp.org/wiki/Special:ReverseLookup/535936

Mind you, to my untrained ear, they sound like two entirely different tunes.

I would call them different but clearly related tunes, in the way that the different versions of Morris dance tunes are obviously cousins, descended from some shared ancestral tune. In this case it may be that the hornpipe tune is a 19th century descendant of the early 18th century Playford tune, adapted for a faster dance.

I think that's the best thing to do, I have the VMP transcriptions of all three volumes of Playford and there is only one tune of that name, this isn't it. Unusual for John Chambers to get it wrong though.  :o

If you'd like all three volumes of Playford, then ABC files, plus PDFs of volumes 2 & 3 are available for download from ChrisP's website here. There is no PDF for Volume 1 as there is a very good book by Jeremy Barlow still in print and it is well worth buying. You can of course create a PDF copy yourself from the ABC file if you wish.

Yes, I've already got that, also looked in several other places and may have got the different versions muddled up in my memory by the time I'd printed out that one to learn it. I'm pretty sure now that the dotted version that I played (2nd tune) is not in any of the proper Playford sources.

Haha, thank you very much, "uncommonly pleasant" is an interesting way to put it. Glad you liked it. (:)

Hello,

This tune is interesting to me, mainly because I don't find it particularly interesting if I don't play around with the chords, but, I do enjoy it a lot more when I do. I've probably listened to Saul's recording over a dozen times, as well as the related Andy Cutting video with part of a workshop at least another 3 or 4, and then assembled the parts I liked + could do with some things I preferred to form this. Jigs always end up going by so quickly so I wanted to pair it with something, and learnt the other tune in this set (Fox and Geese) not two days ago, which I find pairs with this tune fairly nicely. Plus, it creates a fairly pleasing set name of "Hunt the Squirrel and Fox and Geese".

As an aside, you probably shouldn't actually hunt any these things - I prefer to think of this as the sound track to an afternoon meeting the local, and suitably surly, wildlife.

Hunt the Squirrel and Fox and Geese
https://youtu.be/nkuuVbyknqM

It's been very interesting watching everyone's submissions, as it seems many people also looked to their bass end to liven things up a bit, and it's been interesting hearing all the different approaches. I've also enjoyed hearing the approaches to the dB2 dB2 section, and how people handle the rhythm there, as it's not something you hear too often and repeatedly. I'm pretty sure I'm rushing the first note still, and am more sort of 'clipping' the note, or whatever the correct term would be.

In video production news, I also put an additional, tiny, light next to my camera to help illuminate my keyboard, and put a little twinkle in my buttons. The downside of this is that, as it reflects off the instrument, the background wall gets darker and lighter as the camera adjusts to light from the reflection. However, you can make out more of the details in the instruments' birds eye maple though, so, probably still worthwhile. I also put a bit of cheeky reverb on the end.

Also: Happy New Year!

Always interesting to hear those who contribute in words, to contribute in performance too. No wider framework for that comment other than I am grateful to hear players express themselves. Well played, well recorded etc. Happy New Year.
