Theme of the Month for December 2019: Christmas and Winter
« on: December 01, 2019, 07:34:03 AM »

Happy Christmas everyone; it's that time of year again, when we do Christmassy stuff! Anything connected, even (especially) obscurely, to Christmas or winter. Bear in mind that winter in Australia is hot and sunny, so that's it's not all about snow! [Interesting fact: it's statistically more likely in the UK to snow on Easter rather than Christmas!]

Thanks everyone - off to figure out what on earth to play!

Cheers,

Clive

I guess Christmas carols count then....I might even have one in mind. Just got to get it right(ish) before I profer it.

And now (22-12-19) I've got to find wherever I dumped the phone with the camera......

Of course! There are also lots of previous Christmas ThOTM threads to plunder too (which is what I'm going to do!)

The December theme always presents a challenging selection process. Rummaging among the bookshelves I found 'The Christmas Clog'. It is a long time since I have played for a Lancashire clog dancer. Fairly laid back in the original key of A on an A/D Erica and A four stop (including essential clacks and wheezes).

HAve a good one

Bill

PS I have had a request for notation and have attached the original and a transcript in D which is annotated. Hopefully helpful

Here you go. A bit hesitant in places, but at least I have improved the lighting.

Too early for Christmas. But very nicely done, and nice sounding box too.

Thanks Pete.
It's not that Christmassy!  And to be fair that is the theme.
A friend is a Rat Pack tribute singer and he's trying to get me to accompany him out busking. This was his first suggestion and I rooted out the dots over the weekend.

Playing is really secure, and the box - which I assume you made - is lovely too. I'm just a humbug for Christmas. Rat pack is iconic. Good luck with the busking, sounds like a real experience rather than backing track which is my nightmare before Christmas. Of course it's the theme. I'm just holding a one man revolution.

Here's a tune from me; unusually for me, this is a 'learned completely from scratch' job. Learned off Craig Duncan's 'Bluegrass Christmas' album, an Irish Hornpipe in a modal key, Frost and Snow.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDWlTlfLHhA

I was quite surprised that this fits on a normal 2 row 8 bass, but as you see it does. No thirds in the basses though. Played on the G/C Albrecht Liliput.

Cheers,

Clive

Here's Drive The Cold Winter Away, a dance tune that appeared in every edition of Playfords Dancing Master from 1652 to 1728, as it says at Early Music Muse (quite an interesting read on the significance of the title.)

That's me beaten to it,  and much more skillfully done than I am managing, or likely to manage. I'll go for plan B, then.

Very nicely done.  ;D
It's a great tune.

I've been struggling to decide whether to play this 6/4 tune as 3/4, 6/8 or something else.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the amount of Christmas songs you can fit on too. Having trouble with  Julie Andrews’ “my favorite things” though, I think I would need to take out the thirds too.

Great playing a a great song Clive, that box sounds wonderful!

Seeing as I've already visited Hunt the Squirrel, I figured I'd add two the this month's theme :) The first is an old recording, Cold Frosty Morning:

And here's the latest, Snowy Monday by Willy Taylor. Think I've finally managed to put together a system that produces something of far better sound/video quality than the recent videos I've been making!

Yes, I (think I) can see/hear the improvements, assuming the new workflow is in place here (I certainly feel more like the instrument is in the room with me, anyway, especially when the low reeds come in) & comparing the footage to your back catalogue. The only thing for videos I'd suggest is, I don't know if you've tried them yet, but perhaps consider some kind of studio lights? I do most of my recording in the evenings, and I shine a bright white light, fitted with a large diffuser from a tall tripod aimed up at a 45-60 degree angle onto my ceiling & towards me about 2 meters away. It's taken a while to figure out how to get results I was hoping for, and I imagine there are other/better approaches, but, in any case adding way more light to the room helps decrease the needed ISO & shutter speed on the camera significantly, which reduces both the digital noise you see on eg you background walls, as well as reducing subtle smearing when anything moves, which trounces small details (watch the trim around the front edge of your instrument on the bass end) and is what stops everything looking crisp in motion. Main reason I aim it as the ceiling is, all my instruments are very glossy, and any reflections into the camera would be killer. I also find it gives more natural looking shadows.

Everything you're doing seems pretty top notch, otherwise; really nice playing, and I like that tune a lot.

Do you have a Hohner from 1934-1945 with a serial number on?
Send me a private message or comment on the German Accordion Problem spreadsheet to improve the statistics of the project and get an estimate of the production date of the box if it is not known.

I'm a little bit early with this...… The New Year's Gift.
It's a lovely hornpipe just learnt from the great James Hill of Tyneside.
