The Yellow Wattle
« on: December 06, 2019, 10:31:58 AM »

Here is a cheeky little jig - The Yellow Wattle. Tricky to play on a DG it’s like one of those Hanon piano exercises...only for melodeon. As it happens it feels more natural on a BC, although seemingly simple it’s still tricky to play, esp gettin that rhythm. You can simulate this cairdin style box playing on a DG  by pretending your D row is in C, then play the whole tune on the D row (I.e. the low pull E would be D). Can also be played on a single row C box...in theory. I’ve not found a recording of it on a semitone box, or any other box.

Ah, "the Yellow Wattle" ... there's a can of worms, different versions and third parts etc. Well, like all traditional tunes I suppose, but this one because I think it's pretty clear that it's originally a pipers tune.

I always associate it with Micho Russell and it really makes sense when played on a tin whistle. When you listen to Willie Clancy playing it you can hear that the ornamentations on the pipes are really an integral part of the tune (from my hearing anyway) and it's difficult to get that on a D/G box. Don't let me put you off trying though  8)

Hi Roger. I dug out an old recording of a session with a B/C box player and a tenor banjo playing the Yellow Wattle as a two part jig, similar to the version you mentioned. I slowed it down about 10% to make it a bit easier to learn. It goes alright on a D/G box too, and I agree with you that it would also suit a single row C box.

It never gets played at my local sessions, so I've not really learned to play it properly.
Good luck with it!
