Tune of the Month for January 2020: La Mal-Aimable
« on: January 01, 2020, 05:00:57 PM »

This month's winner! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-p67qT6Z4o A really nice french waltz composed by Jean-Christophe Lequerre.

Not one I know myself, so I guess I've got some learning to do too! There's some ABC and music here for those that would like it: https://thesession.org/tunes/18312

Enjoy,

Clive

Lots of versions out there, so adds nothing to the canon but good fun to deconstruct and put together. Hohner GC. As much thought and planning as as application, (with out-take).

Also not much to add once I'd played it through so here is a countermelody written to it for any GC players with a friend.

Looking for an accurate translation of the title; online translations vary from 'badly amiable' to 'the evil kind' the latter of which seems the most plausible to me. Also, very little information about the composer - anyone know if he is a performer? Any other compositions?
Can more or less play it now; will post when I've polished it up a bit.

Thanks for the lovely contrachant. It's on my learn list.

Thanks for the supportive comment. There are one or two deliberate clashes, but it depends whether you play an E minor chord or C chord, just how clashy it is.
I tend to play some right hand chords along with it, so the countermelody is just a frozen version of other things I might play.

Could it be a play on words...something like Crested Hens?

I have just asked some French friends, who told me there was no equivalent phrase in English but, it is when you love someone or something which you know is bad for you. Like - smoking for example or a violent person. That thing, or person is referred to as - La Mal Aimable.
It leads me to wonder where composers get their titles from! I find this a lovely tune to play, with a beautiful melody, which reminds me of walking along the banks of The Seine on a bright sunny day. Lovely!

Edit,
Interesting, I have just had a reply from a second French person, who said it meant “an unlovable person”....for example, someone who is very unattractive or very grumpy. She said it is a phrase that was used in the last century but not so often now.  (:)

Regarding to deepl-Translator it could be "The Friendly Evil". As far as I remember, it was originally written as a piece for practising the melodeon. And as it turned out to be a bit too tricky for the student, it was named something like "The Dreadful Beloved".
And I agree: its's a wonderful piece of music.

I got "The Unlovable." Which seems strangely poignant.

The Larousse has malaimable (one word) as an adjective meaning unpleasant or impolite. No hint that it could be something or someone you like but is bad for you.
The la suggests the tune refers to a lady, perhaps one who spurned the advances of the writer of the tune. We'll never know.

Taking this and Arty's first suggestion together "The Dreadful Beloved" sits well.

Interesting! I've learned and recorded it this afternoon, and as I was doing I thought 'this is as much an exercise piece as a tune'. It's still rather sweet though, and comes out nicely on the Kay Albrecht Liliput in G/C.

Here it is:

I don't think I'm doing anything particularly earth shattering with it, but it's not bad for a hour or so learning it. Not sure if it will stick in my repertoire - it might.

Still experimenting with my Beltuna A/D -  I am sorry about the quality of the sound, my camera seems to have developed a loud hiss!

Thanks to all who have given translations for the title of this tune, especially Arty who has contacted French friends. I can now accept that there is no equivalent English phrase but the various contributions give a realistic feel of what the title is trying to convey.
Better get back to practicing it now!

That's the first version I've come across so far that makes me think this might be a tune worth learning. Thank you David. The Beltuna sounds very sweet, as well.

Thank you Greg, you have made my day!  (:)
I do love this tune, I don’t know why, I know there are much more interesting ones. And now that playandteach has given us a contrechant, it adds another dimension. Thank you Pete, I look forward to playing it with my Concertina friend!  :D

Here's a video we made of this tune some years ago. We have always liked this one.
Here we follow it with Robin's Waltz by Jon Swayne.
