I've had fun playing around with this one (and trying not to wander off into Flatworld). I asked my brother who speaks french about the name and he thought it might mean something like "the pleasing hurt", fun reading the other suggestions and listening to everyones take on it, thanks.

And I'm playing on a loaner fancy box- so that's fun..

And having picked it up, I thought I better play the tune. Just been out moving logs in the cold. Not that I'm blaming the slightly wonky time keeping on that. Warts and all version. La Mal Aimable

It's neat to hear your counter melody & variations coming out of a proper box, rather than a shonky midi rendition of it that I pieced together.

Also you played that well and I enjoyed it. Idk where the warts are, I thought it was good.

Thanks, Gena. Lumpy tempo. Sometimes because I hadn't decided what notes to play on the bits where I was off-piste, sometimes because I was stiff with cold, sometimes because there were bits I hadn't practised enough, and sometimes because I had to wait for the note to speak at the volume I wanted to play, sometimes it's just the red light. I can play in time on the box but it often is humblingly lacking in precision (compared to the clarinet which I could actually play properly). It's hard to get used to that, and that's why I decided to just record stuff here and get over it. It's just nice to hear others, so I should share my own efforts, but I'm not always a fan.

I liked it, especially the variations on the third time though.
And my own tempo was also - I'm sure sure if lumpy is quite the word, but perhaps a bit too elastic on rubato.

After listening to those lovely recordings from Anahata and P&T, I think I have to learn this tune :)

Thanks for the supportive comment. There are one or two deliberate clashes, but it depends whether you play an E minor chord or C chord, just how clashy it is.
I tend to play some right hand chords along with it, so the countermelody is just a frozen version of other things I might play.

I wondered about those measures. At first they seemed a mistake, then less so, now deliberate. Clashy seems the perfect adjective for this tension. Thanks for the new vocabulary and the tune.

Here's my attempt at this one; just a couple of times through with some modest variations in the B part second time.

Hey Pete, is it cool if I play part of your counter melody (mostly the B music part) when I get my performance for this sorted? I've been working on this tune a bit and really want to fit it in.

Of course, no need to ask with any stuff I put out. I've shied away from the B in the A section over a C chord - I think it only works against the melody, or an E minor chord choice. Be good to hear your playing as always.

I'll be completely frank here: I didn't vote for this tune and initially didn't plan to learn it because I found it to be too similar to Flatworld.
But because I really mustn't stop to practice, here are two quick and dirty recordings of La Mal-Aimable:

https://soundcloud.com/laubblaeser/la-mal-aimable-take-1
Played on a G/C Pariselle with single L voicing

And here's a proof of concept for combining La Mal-Aimable with Flatworld. Sloppy execution but I reckon it does its job in conveying my feeling about the similarity of these two.

Played on a D/G Loffet with MM voicing

The GC box sounds great, Fred - and so does the playing.
