.... Whitby and Sidmouth still seem to be going ahead regardless. Similarly with Whitby Regatta. I can't help but feel that optimism is one thing but foolishness is quite another.

 :(

Both festivals have 'wait and see' type messages on their websites, and it is still early days.  I guess there's a balance to be struck between taking action too soon and being prepared for every eventuality - that will be a different balance for each event. Either way these are challenging times and we're all being force to operate in ways outside of the norm.

Do I think either event will go ahead? In my heart of hearts, no.  Can I bring myself to quite face up to this yet. Absolutely not.

My head says we have lost an entire season but my heart still wants to dance in the sun with my friends.

Perhaps the organisers are hoping that there will be enough 'immunity' by then to make things viable?  Given the age profile of many festival goers, I'd guess caution might yet rule our heart's desire to be there, even if both festivals run, - very understandable and very hard on all who have to make the final 'call,' knowing what cancellation will mean to performers and audience alike. not to mention the traders of the towns.

Broadstairs is next in line, I just checked their site, and it's still on so far.

We are booked for Whitby, and really don't want to have to go. No contract yet, and I feel we'll be in no hurry to sign it when it comes.

I signed and returned my contract yesterday, but with the caveat that I was unhappy about the Health and Safety implications of the festival still continuing to go ahead.

I have also heard from a couple of Whitby residents (not including AnnC of this parish) who have said that they are unhappy with the idea of the festival going ahead (and the Regatta the previous week) even in mid-late August.

Add me to the list of nervous locals  (:) The more information that comes out about the virus the more reluctant to take part in large social events, even when restrictions are eased, I get. Especially if they involve lots of people travelling from all parts of the country to get here  :-\
Much better to miss out on things this year and enjoy them safely in 2021, as my Mum used to say " Better to be late in this life than early for the next"

Think I said elsewhere - no festival this summer is likely. There will be virus about until a vaccine comes, next spring if we’re REALLY lucky.  Both cramming into sweaty pubs, and taking deep breaths to belt out song choruses are proven effective ways to pass infection on to all in the room.  Several recent USA TB breakouts were spread via choirs, and in a  christening in Kentucky 36 caught Covid-19

Stay hime, keep safe, WASH those hands … and dream on 🤔

Much as I love Whitby and have been hankering to go back to the folk week as a punter sonetime soon, the thought of all the crowds in the streets - never mind the pubs - means its an absolute no - no for me. I can't see the folk week going ahead when so many other events have been cancelled.
I suspect restrictions will have been eased before the summer, but I can't see that the risks of infection will have abated in any way. Just hope for a vaccine before next summer - but saying that pub sessions and concerts anywhere could be jeopardised for a long while yet.

I haven't received my contract yet, which means that I can put off the decision about whether to go. Like others have said, I hope Whitby 2020 is cancelled, which will take the decision out of my hands. If it does go ahead, I think that few performers will want to commit themselves until much nearer the time, but the organisers will probably want an early commitment. If a significant number of performers are reluctant to make an early commitment, this may force the organisers into cancelling.

I have just heard by e-mail from Barry Evans, one of the Whitby organisers who deals with the contracts. He writes:

Hi Steve
We will be making a decision
[about going ahead or cancelling] in the next month.
Regards
Barry

Gosh, hi Barry! We were in adjacent hospital beds once 🤨

I’d offer that it’s not just about contracts. You also have to be able to sell tickets!  Month to assess events seems a good idea.

Btw what is t’ Regatta doing? Nothing ever stopped that,  in the past! 🤔

I wouldn't want to get in a row with you, but I think it is mainly oars at Whitby.
