There are a couple of youngsters that I’m helping to get started in doing repairs and tuning, so I would probably pass on any donations to them.

Lots to think about there. I had been planning to leave my melodeon to my brother, with a message to say he must learn to play it, but he has now predeceased me, and I can't think of another relative or friend who would appreciate it.  It is too good to give to  someone who won't play it.  I have already written a document explaining what value my various possessions have, so maybe I need to add a note suggesting a couple of dealers to whom it could be sold, or festivals where dealers could be found.

I have a similar issue with my books. I have dozens of books of tunes and songs, and text books about traditional music and song. Many are out of print and might be valued by someone. I know Halsway have a big library, but quite honestly they have so much there, I don't think my collection would make much difference.  I don't hoard books for the sake of it, and have got rid of a lot, but my music books are a bit special to me and I don't want to start eBaying them off. I don't think even Oxfam could easily find takers for them, they're a bit specialised.  I am considering nominating a couple of local folky friends or club organisers and asking them to distribute them or auction them among the singers and players in the area, possibly in exchange for a charity donation.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and I hope it didn't open too many wounds.  It does kind of confirm my feelings that it would be easy to find a home for the more commonplace instruments by donating them to a teaching organisation, but I still have some reservations about the Castagnaries….  Luckily I don't care about the money as all my relatives are better off than me!

Things are always changing, in the past I had friends who had kids who were learning to play and would have loved to have my collection, but they have all moved on now.  Perhaps when the time comes things will have come full circle and there will be an obvious beneficiary, someone whose potential requires an upgrade from Dad's spare Hohner.  Sometimes it's depressing how good a youngster can be, especially given a more responsive instrument.  Meantime I must write a letter of intent to pass my boxes and guitars into safe hands.

Just curious, not greedy - I promise- what Castagnari instruments do you have? I notice you don't list your instruments with your profile. Of course you may either have too many to list, or a desire to be private - both of which are fine?

No problem.  I have a 1914 DG and two Max's, one each in D & C.  The other good box is a DB Binci.  Other than that I have a Bouebe (needs setting up) and a couple of Hohner Clubs.

I also have electric guitars, mandoline, mandola, etc.  I know from past experience that even the specialist shops will try to buy in at a very low price so I feel it would be better to donate them to someone who will genuinely benefit from them - musically rather than financially.

I assume that the 1914 is the main one - which it would be if I had one in GC. Just checked out your age in your profile, and it looks like it should be a fair while before you seriously need to consider these things. I can also see why you'd want to hang on to all of them until you can't play them anymore. Who made the mandola?
Here's wishing you the best of health, and that you ask again in 20 years.

You may be interested in the positive response I received from the EFDSS Education team when I told them of this discussion....

"We do from time to time have people donate instruments to the Education department which, as long as we have space to store, are grateful to receive and which we use in our workshops. In the event we cannot make use of any offered instruments, we are always willing to put a notice up on our Folk Educators Group Facebook site to see whether anyone else could give it a loving home!"

So there's another potential destination for boxes moving towards 'the exit lounge' in the hopefully distant future (:)

Thanks again guys.  So far I'm OK - though an old hip injury makes my back lock up if I stand still for too long.  Sadly too long includes playing for a NW morris dance.  All told as one ages one loses muscle tone and mass so I guess the time will come when the Castagnaries will become too much effort, but the DB is brash enough without too much strain.  Wish I were still playing in a ceilidh band though, it's much easier with a bit of amplification.

Yes, got one already - just never remember to take it with me!  I have to turn out the cupboards and rationalise all my jumk, so I can move it to the car boot then.  Actually I suspect that half my problems arise from sitting too often rather than getting a bit of exercise.
