Am I the only melnetter who has downloaded the dots for 'Granny hold the etc...' and is trying to nut it out? I am obviously very easily led  ;D

Nope, I had a look, and will print it off when I get into work again  ;D It's about time I made use of that high G# (if only I can find some time...)

As a beginner not knowing anything I hope its ok to suggest one I'm already trying to get to grips with...(hope I got it right?)
what about Marmalade Polka (as seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNP5mPr_MgM)
ABC
http://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=www.banjolin.co.uk/tunes/abcs/marmalade/0000

Actually i am not convinced that the tune being played in that clip is the same as the music, although marmalade polka is quite a nice tune (from the music).  What does the team think?   I think i know the tune in the clip as something like "Poor old ?? can't get the ?? out" (?).

The first tune in that clip is Uncle Bernard's Polka which goes into the Maramalade Polka. I spot our (Devil's Dyke Morris Men) fiddle player and one of our melodeon players there.

oops, sorry, I didn't play to the end.  Apologies LDT.

I haven't yet voted, so i might go for the marmalade polka in that case...  (I love polkas)

I'm starting to think people just record and link to whatever they want for a tune- but the commonality is a 2 row D/G box for now, since it's most common.

I've been away for the weekend and mayhem appears to have broken out.  ::)

I'm still up for 'tune of the month' in principle. My personal preference, though, would be for a tune which is neither a standard that 90% of any session will join in on enthuastically (like Speed the Plough, Egan's Polka or Princess Royal), nor yet a party piece like 'Granny Hold the Candle'. Instead, I'd like to propose tunes that are slightly less well known but still session standards, and completely accessible to relative beginners. Marmalade Polka would fit well here (and gets my vote this first month); others in this category that spring to mind are The Perfect Cure, Foul Weather Call and Horse's Brawl (a special for those who like accidentals). But there are hundreds of suitable tunes.

Somebody just post a basic version of any tune, and I'll try it lol. Just not too tricky. This is funny, like family members who can't decide on what restaurant to go to. :D

And GbH of this forum has already responded with a great recording of 'Granny Hold the Candle While I Shave the Chicken's Lip' - although it may lose in the poll, Granny has still won the race! You see, you just can't trust those polls  ;D

How about having, say, one month a selection of reels, then jigs, then polkas etc etc (alphabetically) In this way if we don't particularly want to learn e.g. "polka of the month" we could pick up some general ideas on "polkas" and apply them to whatever "polka" we played or were learning.
Just an idea to take the focus away from one tune in particular and refocus on a broader area of e.g. playing a "polka" for dance, developing the left hand for "waltzes" etc etc etc
cheers

Works fine for me, but it's in E (4#'s), so I'm not sure you'd want to try it!

Clever clogs!

I have to say, if nothing else, then recording and listening to myself playing, and listening to others playing the same thing has certainly made me realise that I need to go back and *think* about how I'm playing. I had no idea that my StP was so mushy! Back to basics for a while I think, and a bit more (or at least *some*) focus on how I'm playing as well as what I'm playing...! That's a bit of a shock to the system  :-[ ::) (:)
