Hi all, in a not entirely unpredictable followup to last month's theme, this time it's 'geographical features that can make you wet'. Rivers, Lakes, Seas, Water is a rather more boring way of putting it, but clearly there's lots more possible things we can use to pick a suitable tune; oceans, ponds, streams, lochs, etc, etc, so please feel free to use anything like this!

Cheers,

Clive

"On the banks of Allan Water" At least, as I remember it and play it.
It's dark here in Egypt and our roof terrace lighting isn't meant for filming, sorry.

I really enjoyed that, thanks Winston!

Here's a copy of a tune I'll be playing this month, with contrechant.
The Water is Wide. I've been listening to James Taylor singing it - irrelevant but nice. And this month's word is 'nice'.

"The Water is Wide"

You've missed us playing that lately at the NE Group, Pete. I was contemplating playing it as another contribution to this thread, but it will be much better if you do, thanks.

Two related tunes from William Irwin, the 19th century Lakeland fiddler, named after the place he lived. They are the Elterwater Hornpipe followed by Elterwater Quickstep. Elterwater is a village as well as a small lake in Great Langdale in the English Lake District.
Both tunes proved a lot trickier to play than they appeared at first. This is the last of many (many) attempts to video the tunes. Played on my L'Elfique with 3rds in on the LH and all 3 reeds on the RH.

Enjoyed those - thanks. Coincidentally, I asked some musician friends if they had any suggestions for this theme last week, and Neil Brookes said 'There's a nice one called Elterwater - but I can't remember how it goes.' And now I know; though I'm not sure which of the two he meant. I'm working on a modern tune, but I think I'll try these once I've sorted my post. Don't want to overtax the small bit of brain responsible for music!

I'm sure this is a silly "newbie" question, but how/where would one find the music to the Irwin tunes?

Thanks.

Yes Chris's site is great, but best to start with the Village Music Project site - https://www.village-music-project.org.uk/

Thanks Hugh. I was just about to post that link.
I actually got the dots for the Hornpipe and the Elterwater idea from a tunebook published by Furness Tradition but I got the ones for the Quickstep from the VMP.

Yes Chris's site is great, but best to start with the Village Music Project site - https://www.village-music-project.org.uk/

Chris is in charge of the VMP transcriptions, his website is up to date and the abc files are far more accessible to copy and download than those on the 'new' VMP website in my experience. YMMV.

Is it just me, or is that very similar to Bonaparte's Retreat?

I'll take it as Midnight on the Water as it does give a good excuse to play it again.

They're usually played together. As here with the wonderful Molly Mason showing how to play guitar accompaniment properly.

Skip the first 2 minutes.
