112 v 1040?
« on: February 11, 2020, 01:18:49 PM »

Prompted by another thread where a contributor posted "I have a 112".
I've seen a few HA112's go for what I consider good money, on eBay recently, and wondered why the buyer would pay more for a 112 than a 1040 in the same key? Am I missing something here? Apart from the facility to shut down either voice and play on just one, I cannot see any advantage, especially when the 1040 has the extra bass and chord buttons.

Given that it's my 112 you refer to, although I think they look better, the real reason was that it was free. Needs a little fettling, by Lester of this parish, then I have a working 2v one-row.

I think what often happens is that people post HA112s online without necessarily knowing much about them and then after doing a little research base the price on HA114s, thinking they have the same thing.  I've often even seen the 2-stops called HA114s in these kinds of listings.

And the 112 is quite a different box to play,  much lighter and easier to chuck about,   it may be heresy but i prefer the 112 personally so would choose to invest in good one at a comparable price to a 114.   Sometimes less is more

Does the 112 have standing reed blocks? If so maybe a 1040 could have better volume with its flat mounted reeds.

I assume the bass on the 112 might be better ( more grunt) , all a guess though.

The 1040 basses sound great. Love them.
Only thing is, I find myself wanting more.

The 112 has a growl box (is that what you call the bass handle thing with the spoon basses?), and the 1040 does not. 1040 reeds are waxed in flat against the fondo.

As are the bass reeds in a 112

"Only thing is, I find myself wanting more."

Is that more basses or more 1040's? Either would suffice in my opinion.

Both  ;D ;D ;D

I meant more options in the basses but more 1040s would give me that. I'd really like minor key friendly options. You can only do so much faking.

My fingers are fairly short and I initially  found the spoons of the 112 more difficult to operate than the inset buttons of the 1040. I like the look of the 112 though - and if when I bought my 1040/G a 112/G had been available I would have gone for that instead (I actually acquired both  a 1040/G and a 112/C). The limited basses were an attraction for me- as I wanted an instrument I could see myself using to it's full extent ( if not it's full potential in more competent hands) .
