Johnny Óg Connolly - beautiful melodeon playing
« on: February 23, 2020, 03:30:09 PM »

but here's a wee tune.
Not an obvious choice of tune for a one-row..

Richard, would you like to be the one to tell him?
Johnny's rendition (with three added parts) is exquisite.
And keep in mind that he had been playing the one-row melodeon for only a few months when he recorded this.

Enjoy.

Lovely.

Perhaps Richard was thinking about the tune played in the key that Martin Hayes chose for the tune, Gm. I have experimented with it in Gm on my C#/D, and Am (B/C fingering for Gm). Both doable but after some trials I chose the easier option, as here - Em.  :|glug

He is playing an E♭ melodeon. The tune is in C minor...which would be B minor (same fingering) on a C#/D.

Of course, sorry. I should have checked the key of the recording. But had I just thought for a second I would have remembered that the tune involves the minor 6th - C-nat in the Em version, G in the Bm, meaning that Bm fingering is the only possible solution on a one-row.

Indeed. Johnny's take on it is masterful I think. Really gorgeous. I had never heard the tune before he recorded it.
