I have some questions.

And also, when does one know to learn a tune on one row rather than across two rows? Or does one learn all ways of playing in the tune in both octaves of a two row?

Thank you!

Good question! I also don't know when one is supposed to play one row or across rows. I learned to play this tune recently before looking at all these different videos (very informative and entertaining (:)) and realise that I am playing the A part of StP across the rows - quite wrongly from the look of it.

Cripes! Everyone is so good. I have a lot of catching up to do!

Hi Selam - thanks for pointing me in this direction again!  ;)

This is my first time back here in MONTHS (sadly I haven't picked up my melodeon for weeks because of a course I am doing that I really MUST complete or I lose my job  :-\ ) so it may be October next year before I can Speed the Plough along with the rest of you. My left hand is out of its splint now too, which makes holding (and playing!) an instrument a lot more comfortable.

I still don't understand the ABC notation-thingy but I will work on it; I prefer the dots though - it's how I was taught music as a kid and it kind of stuck.

The dots

There is no right or wrong way, just different ways.  The choices you make will lead you to develop your personal style of playing.  So yes to your second question, learn as many different ways as you can so you have a choice.

There is no 'supposed to' in this business, so your way of playing is definitely not wrong, its just different.  Learn as many different ways of playing as you can, and choose what you think is appropriate in the circumstances.

Here's my attempt, for what it's worth - first and only take, (many) warts and all.  I have found it really useful to listen to and watch myself like this.  It has made me realise just how 'mushy' my playing is at times, and as for that flying forefinger....! If anybody has any ideas about how I can train my fingers to stay on the butttons, I will be very grateful.  2 years of compounding bad habits, I'm afraid.

I have some questions.

My diato is in Sol/Do, and because the StP I have is written in Sol I have learned it in Sol using most of the outer row --- but I use many notes from the Do row. From what I have seen, most people are playing it on one row, which I see makes the number of push and pulls pretty even, and gives different stresses in the rhythm. I see Ollie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t0vPUYbvOE) playing his Re/Sol on the Sol row, and he has put in some excellent left hand work --- but I cannot see what he is doing in the bass. Since I want to imitate Ollie I will just have to learn StP on my Do row, right? But none of my chords are doing what his do.

Ollie, are your thirds taped? What chords are you hitting?

And also, when does one know to learn a tune on one row rather than across two rows? Or does one learn all ways of playing in the tune in both octaves of a two row?

Thank you!

I'm not quite sure what you mean by sol and do row, but I play StP in G on the inside row. I don't have my thirds taped, although I'm considering it. The chords I play are:

G/ / / / G/ / / / Am/ / Bm/ / C/ / D/ / G/ / / / G/ / / / C/ / G/ / D/ / C*/ / for the A part

G/ / / / G/ / / / Am/ / Bm/ / C/ / D/ / Em/ / D/ / C/ / G/ / C/ / G/ / D/ / C*/ / for the B part

*this "C" chord I use is a C chord with a D fundemental.

Hmmm, that's probably as clear as mud. I'll try to do another video focused on the bass end for you.

Great stuff Graeme - glad you had the box wired up to the midi on this one! Thought you might accompany me in an Eb version?

I love that Scottish version Graeme,it sounded just as I hoped it would! It would be a good tune with the Circassian circle.

I have to mention that I first learned 'Speed the Plough' from an old Kerr's Scottish dance book so I've always preferred a Caledonian swing to it.

After the comments about the straps..thought I'd give both options a try so here's the latest video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC32DJE5kj8
first one strap, then two...had to keep stopping with two straps as the left one kept slipping.

Both seem much better on the stability front than Take 1, have you lengthened the right hand strap? Also made the whole tune crisper as I surmised. Keep up the good work.

Hi Ollie, I mean G/C for Sol/Do. Here is France they use solfege, so your D/G would be called a Re/Sol.

So on my G/C I will be playing on the inside row in the key of C and using the chords

C/ / / / C/ / / / Dm/ / Em/ / F/ / G/ / C/ / / / C/ / / / F/ / C/ / G/ / F*/ / for the A part
C/ / / / C/ / / / Dm/ / Em/ / F/ / G/ / Am/ / G/ / F/ / C/ / F/ / C/ / G/ / F*/ / for the B part

*this "F" chord I use is a F chord with a G fundamental.

So now I need to figure out how to make Dm and Em! I guess for Dm I make sure to use the D and the F on a pull, and for E I use the E and the G on a push.

I will experiment with this tomorrow when the neighbors are awake.

That would be great to have another video focusing on the bass end, but maybe you can also include some tips about making your ornamentations in the right hand.

Many thanks!

Hi Selam - thanks for pointing me in this direction again!  ;)

You're welcome!  ;D Give StP a go though. The TOTM is gonna be a great way to keep learning and melodeoning is the BEST thing on study breaks! Trust me! (Although I seem to be doing more breaks than study at the moment...  :-\)

I'm gonna try to play StP again tomorrow. It's currently officially banned...  :-\
