I'm not quite sure what you mean by sol and do row, but I play StP in G on the inside row. I don't have my thirds taped, although I'm considering it. The chords I play are:

G/ / / / G/ / / / Am/ / Bm/ / C/ / D/ / G/ / / / G/ / / / C/ / G/ / D/ / C*/ / for the A part

G/ / / / G/ / / / Am/ / Bm/ / C/ / D/ / Em/ / D/ / C/ / G/ / C/ / G/ / D/ / C*/ / for the B part

*this "C" chord I use is a C chord with a D fundemental.

Hmmm, that's probably as clear as mud. I'll try to do another video focused on the bass end for you.

Hi Ollie, I mean G/C for Sol/Do. Here is France they use solfege, so your D/G would be called a Re/Sol.

So on my G/C I will be playing on the inside row in the key of C and using the chords

C/ / / / C/ / / / Dm/ / Em/ / F/ / G/ / C/ / / / C/ / / / F/ / C/ / G/ / F*/ / for the A part
C/ / / / C/ / / / Dm/ / Em/ / F/ / G/ / Am/ / G/ / F/ / C/ / F/ / C/ / G/ / F*/ / for the B part

*this "F" chord I use is a F chord with a G fundamental.

So now I need to figure out how to make Dm and Em! I guess for Dm I make sure to use the D and the F on a pull, and for E I use the E and the G on a push.

I will experiment with this tomorrow when the neighbors are awake.

That would be great to have another video focusing on the bass end, but maybe you can also include some tips about making your ornamentations in the right hand.

Many thanks!

Yup, that's how to get the chords. Erm, I'm not sure what I do to get the ornamentation, it sort of just happens! Sorry I can't be of much more help on that.

C chord with D bass is Amazing  ;D In fact ending on the subdominant is amazing in general, although I mainly do it in the Dorian mode, where it sound fantastic. You'll hear more C/D if you vote for Chassepain in the next TotM...

My Version as promised, did a bit of mucking about but couldn't resist the Scottish Dance version (complete with midi).

I'm intrigued how your backing works.  Are you using one of the specialist accordion 'Exapander' things?  If so, does that mean that all of the accompaniment is being controlled, in real time, by your left hand (rather, than say, using backing tapes or similar)?  Whatever it is, you manage to achieve a big sound from it all that's quite striking when coming from a lone musician.

Whilst I doubt that I'll ever appreciate this style of Scottish music as much as the 'traditions' that I more naturally gravitate to, I still can't help but be impressed at what you do.  Perhaps more than anything else, this TOTM project is making a good job of showcasing, in practical terms, the differences between different instrument types.  For me, this video adds a great deal to this comparison.  Thanks.

I've not got video connected yet, but...<snip>lots of theory</snip>

Chris - now I've sat down and worked through your suggestions, I'm beginning to better understand some of what I've been doing and - more to the point - get some ideas about how to build on it.  Although I understand the basic theory of modes, applying that to practical applications doesn't seem to come so easily.  So, anything that helps 'lift the fog' is appreciated.   Thank you.

My offering played on a Hohner 1 Row 4 Stop, unfortunately youTube as mangled the sound quality a bit (after I had had my go)

Note to self - Do something about double chin (keep it out of camera shot would be a start)

I nearly soiled myself whilst watching graememackay's Scottish dance version. Unbelievable. Never heard, let alone seen myself playing before. What a difference the camera makes! But why? It never lies. (P.S.) Index finger on left hand now minus nail after an 'ouch - that **#?ing hurt' at work. Basses later I should think.....and 'umble pie for supper too.

After the comments about the straps..thought I'd give both options a try so here's the latest video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NC32DJE5kj8
first one strap, then two...had to keep stopping with two straps as the left one kept slipping.

Both seem much better on the stability front than Take 1, have you lengthened the right hand strap? Also made the whole tune crisper as I surmised. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. nope haven't lengthend the strap but I have shoved the melodeon further left and changed seats...the other sofa the springs have gone a bit so you end up sinking into the chair. ::)
I agree with Lester  - it's sounding crisper; good! Also the melodeon looks much more stable with you now.

Good stuff, Lester. I like it! You've captured the proper English feel to it.
I think It works well on a 1-row. I'll have to give it a try on my Hohner 1R4S in G. Should be nice and growly.

Yep, that's the usual way to fake Dm and Em (you're actually playing Dm7 and Em7). If that doesn't sound right you could remove the thirds from your chords depending on your melodeon.

I've had to put my hand through further as otherwise I really can't reach the inside basses. So the left handstrap comes over my knuckles...at least that's where it started...I may have uncochously moved it. and yes I am resting the heel of my thumb on the air button.

In danger of thread drift here, but just a quickie. Any more discussion on holding the instrument and posture ought to be somewhere else, probably Teaching/Learning topics.

The LH strap should be loose enough to allow you to comfortably reach the inside row of bass/chord buttons, but not so loose that there is a lot of slack between the strap and the back of your hand. Just a little bit of space is what's needed - if you can insert your RH fingers snugly between the strap and back of your left hand, it's probably adjusted about right.  The LH strap should then lie somewhere over the back of your hand, towards and possibly just over the lower knuckles.

Right... apologies for the video and sound quality, I've not done this before (probably the only person under 30 who has never used youtube or video software!). It's made me pretty mad waiting for videos to render and the end quality is still poor! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8C6ap9T0ts.

Punchy, and sounded different than many other entries. I liked the style.  Actually I'm not in love with this tune, but I like the entries.

Having listened to some of the examples, I think mine might be a bit slower than it should be. Also, you'll have to ignore the rude interuption of my rescue dog.   ;D

Sandy,
That's absolutely brilliant! The tempo is perfect IMO, and rock-steady. Nicely worked out set, with very imaginative bass/chords. I can't remember whether you were at Issy Emeny's workshop at Witney 2 years ago. We did something like that with STP.

And very professionally, you kept going with ne'er a hesitation when your dog joined in.  (:)
Good stuff. Loud applause!

Thank you Steve.  I wasn't in Issy's workshop but remember she did a minor version of it. That's the first time today that I've put some minor variation in it. Might try it at the local folk club tonight without the dog  ;D

cheers
