Tune of the Month for March 2020: Reel de Ste Anne
« on: February 29, 2020, 10:09:16 PM »

Here we are, a french canadian classic, so ably played by Serge Carrier (great channel) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ChU75pxDWE

I've had a quick go at learning this, and as Graham says, you're going to want to slow youtube down if you want to learn this off that video! Look for the playback speed setting on the cog icon, if you haven't tried it before. 75% or 50% speed, and the world is a lot easier!

I hadn't heard of this site before, so thanks for the tip and the ABC:

Good to revisit this tune after some years and tweak a bit. 4stop, two row and out-take.

Serge and folksbluesnbeyond, thoroughly enjoyed listening to your playing. Nice clear sound. Really beautiful.
I'm not a fan of the playing of chords and basses that drown out the melody. Each to their own,I suppose.

There seem to be lots of version of this tune from various places and on various instruments. The differences are mostly in the ornamentation especially fiddle shuffles et al.

This version from the notation I have from a band called Merlin that I used to play in some years ago in Manchester (I'd be playing bass not melodeon).
I've taken it at a leisurely pace with just 2 reeds LM on the treble side.

I think the Serge Carrier arrangement is definitely a 3 chord tune where as a lot of variations would allow the player to get away with just the 1st and 5th chord. I am guessing that is why he has a Piano accompaniment.

The bulk of well played examples I have heard have been either Irish, or Blue Grass. Most of them have been on the right side of excellent. I'm hoping to achieve something...okish, with an English accent.

However, I am struggling to work out how the dots shown have a G# accidental,  but the one row musical examples (that I like best) can't do that.  I can't work out quite what's happening instead. Are the note just staying natural? That's what I'm playing at the moment, but it doesn't sound right. it sounds more "right" to my ears if I go up to B, but still not right. Flumuxed for now.

Here's my take on this - I'm a bit slower than Serge - he takes 110 seconds to go through 3 times; me, 150 seconds!

On a Castagnari Giasco 1 in D/G, and my response to the G# question is "what G#" - it's G natural for me! :-)

Here's my version - loosely based on the Serge Carrier video and played on my Hohner 4 stop in C.

Not sure what to say about this one, it was fun to play around with.

Honestly the reality of what's happening right now all over the world is settling over things like a dark cloud. I hope music will be a comfort to all of us through this and that we can protect ourselves and each other as best we can. Take care.

I don't look at other versions for fear of becoming a little intimidated. I found this version on FolkTuneFinder.
Not quite the same as most of the others posted to date. Oh well...
A quick run through with no chords/basses.  On my D/G Maestro.

In case it's helpful for anyone else, here's my (relatively accurate?) transcription of Serge Carrier's playing, with chords that seem to make sense to me. Written without repeats to highlight the variations that are selected consistently:

I learned this tune “St Anne’s Reel” as an Irish reel when I was a beginner of melodeon. But this month  I tried to play “Reel de Ste Anne” as Quebecois with foot tapping for the first time.I am not a step dancer,it is hard to play with tapping. :Ph

My setting of St Anne's Reel, played for a border morris dance. A prize for the first person to guess which.
For some reason, it has become known as Stan's Reel  ;D
