My wife has just nearly choked with laughter when I read the comment above about a virus getting trapped inside the bellows of a melodeon and never getting out again!

‘Poor little thing! ‘She said. ‘What an appalling way to die!’

Those of us of a certain age will know how to deal with this.
Just cut up your favourite newspaper, thread it onto a string and hang it on a nail on the door of the outside Thunderbox .  :o

As all melodeon makers have now been asked to switch their production into making respirators there could well be a world shortage of new melodeons in the next few months, maybe now would be a good time for MAD to take charge and snap up a new box (or two!) before supplies run out.

There's a tune that might help, it's called The Dettol Highlanders.

The big advantage of Izal, assuming that you can get even that these days, is that any left over can be put to good use when replacing bellows tape, or for other bellows repairs, since absolutely nothing sticks to it.

To bring ITM into it....I remember going to the toilet on a Belfast-Dundalk train in the early 80's and finding that the Izal like toilet paper had NIR stamped on every sheet. I stole a sheet as a souvenir.

(NIR = Northern Ireland Railways)

Sheep dip for 30 minutes. Hang to dry 3 days, then burn the remains.

I understand that protocol was written from banjos, not melodeons.

Elderly amateur musician hoping to stave off dementia by learning to play the melodeon.  Main instrument a Tommy, also D/G and G/C pokerworks,  a single row 2 stop Hohner, and a new addition to the free reedery, a rather splendid Paolo Soprani four voice 120 bass c-system chromatic button accordion.  Very shiny, very loud, and about the same size and weight as a small car.  Now I’ve traded me Benny with (ahem) a cash adjustment, to a three voice 60 bass Castagnari K3.

In all seriousness - that may not be as stupid an idea as it sounds. With a (BBC News thismorning) projected NHS requirement for 8 times the available number of ventilators over the Corona virus peak it isn't "Spitfires" we need it is in design terms Jeeps - allegedly designed over 48 hours for an expected service life of 72 hours.....and the produuction technology of the Mosquito.

If anyone currently working in NHS bio-medical engineering can provide me with performance parameters for ventilators please drop me a PM.

Don’t know about the kit. My last gas project was in 1992, scotched when all spare ventilators were appropiated for the Gulf war.

Concur that this is not all going to be full ITU level. It’s possible to support and oxygenate using close fitted masks. In the end severe Corona is pneumonia. The machines need to be simple, automatic and capable of rigorous cleaning. The 1970s ones didn’t even have electronics! They seemed to work …

I’m a semi retired Xray Dr, now “working from home” 😇   Used to specialise in infection, stroke, but only generalist ITU. Did have a fun 24 hours in there though, (also an ex motorcyclist) 😉

On a horribly serious note after all the mirth, I'd suggest Isopropyl Alcohol to wipe down the box.  It doesn't have the nasty smell of meths and is safe on most surfaces - though not on cheap anti-reflective coatings.  I have 5 litres being delivered for the weekend.

As per above. 😀 meths does smell, and usually has dye in it, as it is pretty poisonous, origin of the phrase “blind drunk”.  But otherwise it evaporates completely

Ethyl alcohol is just fine , but subject to much tax and duty. Also could be a waste of cask strength whisky 😉

Isopropyl is very safe on skin, the stuff on medical swabs. Not “poisonous” but don’t drink, it will truly upset your gut.

All will utterly disrupt lipid coat viruses 👍

Digression anecdote … my very first medical patient had drunk antifreeze, also a good anti viral, but also poisonous. We called the poisons people … specific antidote was …  ethanol!  Pharmacy had none … “oh, just use whiskey”!

Whole bottle was … probably a bit much … but he went home OK, if somewhat hung over 😉

Is 40% alcohol too weak?
Thinking of loaning a box to a neighbour.... the smellof Whye and MacKay might be preferable to meths.
News of two Covid cases in Lewis today tells me that we are no longer beyond the front that infection has reched.

Don't buy anything until this scare is past. If you suspect or fear a box may be contaminated, don't touch it for at least 72 hours' If you lend a box to anybody, be prepared to isolate it, if/when you get it back.

It’s a really fragile virus. Basically a soap bubble (stolen cell membrane) stabilised by some proteins. The stalks are used to make that merge with the next cell host.

Seems it dies very quickly on soft furnishing. Has survived 3 days on “cool clean steel in humid conditions”.

We discussed it in London meeting world Tb day* last month. Very similar. It “likes” to be coughed out in a tiny droplet, Get in via nose or eye (connects to nose via a duct), we don’t actually know about inhalation, but logically … yes

*Whereas absolutely NO concern came up about transmission via melodeons 🙄. i’d guess 2 days in a warm dry place would kill nearly all droplet viruses though. eg Last month I simply left any notes given in change on a radiator for a while. Don’t do that to your melodeon, the reeds might fall out 😳

Never forget that washing those hands for 20 seconds is a fantastic defence. (I’m a medic, ID background)

Last month I simply left any notes given in change on a radiator for a while.

I've bought very little with cash recently, and "contactless card payment" suddenly has a huge new significance!

The choreography at Screwfix  was impressive when I went in to pick up some bits this morning (click and collect only, of course). Only one customer inside at at time. Table near entrance with card reader for PIN verification, then I had to step back out of the door while the young lady put the goods on the table, then I had to wait for her to retreat behind the counter before coming back in to pick them up.
