Wood Supplier UK (Not a Timberyard!)
« on: March 26, 2020, 08:51:22 AM »

My local model building shop is closed for obvious reasons at the moment and doesn't have an online shop.

Can anybody recommend a good online shop for me to buy sheets of wood from? Ideally around 1000x100mm as opposed to 8ft sheets! I'm after material to build a new set of bellows frames (they'll most likely be covered in leather but I may see how they look with a dozen coats of Tru-Oil) and a new bass reed block. I like to work with lime in all my modelling endeavours and can't see why it wouldn't be a practical wood to use here also, though I'm not beholden to that choice.

How was I to know that model making shops wouldn't make it onto the essential list of businesses!?

Many thanks all, and stay healthy.

Adam.

I'd ring around local cabinet makers and joiners. Most are self employed so will still be working. If you get hold of one, you'll probably be given a few more numbers to try.
Whereabouts are you?
I used to get quite a few people calling in for odd bits and pieces, and wouldn't mind cutting something to size if I wasn't in the middle of something.
Delivery/collection might be more of a problem unless it's part of your exercise walk or on the way back from shopping.

David Dykes, luthier supplies might have what you are after.
May be pricier than a model shop, but you are guaranteed quality.

Worth asking Pete at Acorn instruments.  He does some wood machining,  uses maple quite often which is probably more suitable that lime for bellows frames.

I get most of my stuff from eBay. If you search, for instance, for (say) 'beech timber' you'll see lots of items suitable for bellows frames ( ditto with maple/oak etc). Plus there are various tonewood suppliers e.g. https://www.touchstonetonewoods.co.uk/

I have quite a few off cuts of maple, will check size tomorrow,I also have a stock of steamed beech which would be idealalso.
Let me know the longest length that is required and I can cut to approx length and send.

For the record,I have been a cabinet maker and woodturner for 40 years and still have a fully fitted out small workshop.
I always have maple in stock because I still manufacture regimental Pace Sticks.and a large quantity of steamed beech
I produce the wooden parts for another company to fit the brass components and polish.

Give me a ring on 01347 811199,I will try to help.

Why do I get the feeling ( from your post) you where asking for “sheet”  stock which is different than solid wood .
Are you looking for for plywood sheet or solid wood?
You said “model building” /or I might say craft store so I question.

In the case of the OP he wants to make bellows frames and could get Pete to cut some stock to the desired basic size, that’s why.

My Maple offcuts are 300mm long by 25mm thick by 200mm plus wide.
They are just going to be sawn up for firewood therefore are if you pay postage they are available.
A donation to a Cancer charity if you wish would be appreciated.

When I have bought 'sheet' wood it has always been solid wood as opposed to ply. It is solid wood I was after. The shop is a dedicated wood and metal model making shop, ships, weapons and planes.
