Been 13 days since the last post! Illness descended. Better now. Two bourrees.

Three mazurkas and a scottish.

Something of a theme for this entry in the Bal Folk Tune Book Project. I noticed that a number of mazurkas I play have a characteristic of beginning the B section with the IV chord. It creates a lovely sense of levitation and, if the song were telling a story, I think that’s when you would know the two of them were really in love!

Thanks Gary. Those mazurkas sound lovely, and very danceable.
I just realised the Bal Folk tunebook has been sitting unopened in my back room for years. You've encouraged me to try playing some of them now.

Two Bourrées!

https://accordeonaire.com/

Also, as it turns out, I have been laid off for pandemic related reasons. I'll be fine and everyone is going through something. But I have added a "support this blog" plea -- first time I've done that since the blog started in 2011. Any help is appreciated, none is required. I am just grateful that you are listening.

I know. Two posts in one weekend is bad blog strategy.

https://accordeonaire.com/2020/06/22/valse-a-bargoin-with-brigid/

But my daughter Brigid came up for Father's Day, and, for the first time since the shutdown, I was able to play music with a human.

A beautiful three part waltz.

That's really nice! As you mention, good sound using two phones to record - I don't think I'd have thought of that. Being outside also helps a lot with that sound clarity, (if you can avoid bird song, traffic noise etc.)

Nice clear sound - can I ask what software you use for video editing - I play guitar & would like to be able to accompany myself for a few tunes ( still in isolation)  thanks,     John

Hello, John,

Sorry, I thought I had answered you! I use VideoPad, which costs around $60, but is intuitive and does what I need it to do. I just did a video for my church choir with 20 tracks -- not bad. For equipment, I record on my phone, and then just use a regular Dell laptop to create the video.

Thanks!

I think I wouldn't mind bird song, but we had to do it three times because we're on a bend of the road that inspires local teens to rev their engines as they go by.

Holy Cow! Nine days since my last post and I sink to the second page!   :Ph  Sorting out my employment situation has been distracting!

Here are two bourrées performed in honor of my impending four month wedding mensiversary (not a made up word).

A bourrée and a polka. Surprisingly only the first polka that I've done. How did that happen? I'll get on that. I did these a few months ago.

When I heard the bourrée, it hit me that I knew the tune from somewhere-- took me a moment to place it as the Road to Boston (or at least a close relation), a march that still gets some use in US fife and drum bands and the New England contra scene. The first part is a bit different, but you could probably get away with swapping one version for the other once around as a variation, at least over here. https://youtu.be/TmuQgBf8ZIc

Did some very superficial poking around on the internet and read some youtube comment claiming that the Road to Boston was based on a late 18th century French tune that some colonials from Rhode Island took up as a march-- I wouldn't be surprised if there was an intermediate step or two involved of course. Ha, it also seems someone defaced the wikipedia page about the march claiming that it's from Denmark, "ecsactly [sic] the same tune" as something from there. Wherever it comes from-- I'm betting on France, personally-- it's lovely how tunes bubble up in different places and different times with different accretions and alterations.

Anyway, nice playing! Really appreciate the videos-- had been thinking about picking up a copy of the book and this is pushing me over the edge.

Thank you bluegreen, and everybody. I'm not surprised that that tune sounded familiar, it has that universal quality, and if you approach it as the last tune in a set, it really seems to take off. In the Patrick Bouffard link, it's the second tune, and I'll tell you, if you are listening in the car (the way we used to when we would go places) and that tune comes on, you are immediately pounding out rhythm on the steering wheel!
