What Sex is Your Melodeon?
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:52:19 PM »

Well...here's an interesting question. Two people have spoken to me today about my melodeon, one suggesting that my melodeon is female ("isn't she beautiful?") and the other said of my instrument - "wow, he's loud isn't he?".

Now I hadn't thought about this before - my box is neutral (if you'll pardon the expression). But what sex is your box? Is it a he or a she?

My Jorgina had a very feminine name but was a bit heavy, square and bulky...I think she might have been a transsexual...

With the treble buttons fashioned into a handlebar moustache pattern, I guess it doesn't need stating which my box is.

My Hohner was a female, as evidenced by her name...Erica ;D My Saltarelle however, is definitely male, and generally known as Peter, although I'm not quite sure why... (or indeed what this says about me!).

Used to own a Beltuna SAMUEL. Now got a SARA. Always quite fancied a LILY, not so much a TOMMY. etc.

Tommy - a bloke
L'Elfique - an Elf (of indeterminate sex as I don't know how to sex an elf (Ooo Err Mrs))
Mignon - Girl (translates to "poppet" it would seem)
Erica - a bloke (I know Erica is a girl's name but it is loud and brash and I don't like that in a woman)
Streb - bisexual (can be anything you like at the flick of a switch  (:) )
Lester - my Lester 1 row is a suave debonair gentleman of a melodeon (its also broken waiting for my retirement for some TLC))

My best friend in a whimsical mood named my box Thomas, which suits it so well that I suppose it must be male.

In german it is somehow easier ... it's called "das Akkordeon" (neutrum = neutral), or "das Melodeon" (also neutral), but "die Harmonika" (female)
At least there is no male expression for a squeeze box .... interestingly, in german all music instruments seem to be neutral or female, I don't any real "male" music instruments.

I think of my Casali as a favourite horse rather than a human of either sex. It rarely does what I want it to do, sometimes it chucks me off unexpectedly and leaves me stranded, but when both it and I are working together well!!!!!!!

Morgane is a female name, and Corona is a feminine word (meaning crown in Spanish). Ariette is a no brainer. My other 1-row have no model name and hence no sex...

Concerina man myself (see other thread)   On Accordion? Great question IMHO

My Oakwood is businesslike and gets the job done in a session. Its extra chords take me up into keys with more sharps, but it has a sensitive side and loves to play Blues. Male, I'd say on balance.

The Gaillard is soft toned on single note and can 'swing'. With both banks it voices the gutsy bandonion of an Argentine brothel. It's extra chords are in the jazz keys of Bb Eb and Ab. It actually likes saxophone! Soft buttons a pleasure to run fingers over and comfortable staps. It was 9 months late! This surely makes her a woman.  Cost a lot - but "she's worth it"
