Incredible virtuosity on a 2R8B: Øyvind Sandum
« on: May 10, 2020, 11:18:45 AM »

Musiker Øyvind Sandum «Maurenes inntogsmarsj», by Tom Willy Rustad.

This seems impossible, but there it is on video,  including...
Tunes on the bass with treble arpeggios, then moving on to tunes on the right-hand thumb, while continuing the arpeggios above.  All with perfect rhythm and separation of notes, plus picotages.
And he does this with only 2R 8B, despite often changing key and using all manner of unexpected sharps and flats.  Phew!

Whilst flicking around with the bass register buttons, too! Why?  because he can! Thanks for putting this up, Jack - as you say, it kinda defies belief, but there it is - both a pleasure and a joy.

Truly amazing! His wonderful of the RH thumb is crucial to playing like this. Also a large hand span - he can very nearly reach from one end of the keyboard to the other.

Where is my kazoo? That's all I think I'm fit to play after watching a video like this.

Yes utterly stunning!
I've had similar thoughts too Steve, shall we form a kazoo orchestra?
I think I need to lie down after that!

He has certainly done his 10,000 hours! It is amazing !
I noticed that he doesn't use his right hand little finger very much at all, until the very last section.

And remember it was written by yet another Norwegian player: Tom Willy Rustad.
There's a lot of amazing music lurking in those mountains and valleys.

The 5-finger technique is likely reinforced by the use of 5-row chromatics.  Many Norwegian players use both instruments.

Don't think I'd have believed it if I hadn't seen it.  Thanks for posting this.

Also, I'm pretty sure he's playing a Castagnari Weilly (4 Voices on the registers) Mine has disappeared into the cupboard, after this, and is refusing to come out!!

Oh... I thought it was a Trilly, with those switches across the grill and the piston switches for the bass end....

Hmmm.... It's difficult to tell. The Weilly and Trilly look pretty much identical. In the video the grille switches are white, like the Castagnari photo of the Trilly, whereas the Weilly photo has black switches. I know that isn't necessarily reliable as the colours could be customisable.

However, in the video he is playing with the 6th switch activated. On a Trilly that switches in just a single M reed. On a Weilly, the same switch activates two treble reeds MM. I can't be sure because the music is so fast and there are so many RH chords and harmonies, but in the few places where he is just playing a longer treble note, to me it sounds as if the treble is just a single voice, i.e. no tremolo, which would indicate a Trilly. But I could be wrong...!

Which ever instrument it is, it is fabulous playing.  (:)

Thanks Steve, I'm only aware if the Trilly, so bow to your knowledge.
As you say it doesn't matter what the box is, it's just stunning playing!

After "liking" the video on Facebook I was invited by Øyvind Sandum to "like" his "Musiker Øyvind Sandum" page, which I did (there's an awesome 1 row video on there!). I sent him a quick message with a link to this thread for him to read it for himself and received the following reply:

"Wow! Say to them all I’m thankful! It took a while to learn this tune. I love it."

I will ask him if his box is a Weilly or a Trilly.

Here's a link to the one row video. The huge CBA by his feet may go some way towards explaining his right hand dexterity!

Øyvind Sandum one row duet.

Thanks for connecting us Pete.
It will be nice for him to realise the stir he has caused amongst melodeon friends who can recognise his playing for the incredible virtuosity shown.

When I saw your replied to this thread, I thought you might have transcribed it for us  ;D

That's definitely Steve_freereeder's area of expertise!  :o  I can transcribe barely legible written music but absolutely nothing by ear!

The duet that Pete has linked to has some sensitive and good playing, and a much more achievable tune!!!
Thanks for that Pete.
