As a follow on thought ... are there any recommended tutor books for B/C/C#?   Or maybe for B/C since that would take me halfway there?    Thanks.

the most readily BC  tutor is called 'the  box'.    basic but better than  nothing- Hobgog, misic room etc stock it.

It sounds a great event in Aviemore.  I just don't yet know what stage I'll be at in March.

Tony  - ability not important, there's no poser's there - well apart from Graeme, but he's allowed to pose a bit as he's so flippin' good  ;)
I'm rubbish but still had a great time!

Nice basses though on a d/g but wanting one chord -- Am. Just one extra button lol. Well I could want more chords, but Am pops up a lot.
I thought you have Am on a D/G box?  ???

Yes, that makes Am (or Am7). So no need for an extra button.

Whether it really is better than nothing is debatable. Possibly so if you had absolutely no clue about button boxes of any description and had no access to keyboard maps. Not your case.

With very few exceptions I play only Irish and Newfoundland music but I started on an ADG and migrated to a BC and have been very happy I did. As so many say, the row crossing is confusing at the beginning but once you get it everything seems to fall into place more easily. i feel far less stuck in certain keys.
And yes to Damien Connolly's book. It is a bit simple if you have been playing for a while but its clarity and precision are exemplary and it is an excellent check on whether something works or not. Still, it is VERY Irish, including the ornaments--not that that is a bad thing.

A friend used it to get going - she bought it off the internet I think.

I have to say I agree, now I've seen it.  In a 31 page book there's four pages on how to read music, 13 pages are simply tunes with no markup or tutorial element.  I think there's only about four pages actually about the instrument.   There's more info in the "Scales Tutorial" thread here - and that's not even supposed to be about B/C!
