New tunes
« on: July 01, 2020, 12:10:16 AM »

https://youtu.be/NrvIokSh6Ro

These are 2 new waltzes with Lockdown-inspired titles, 'Light at the End of the Tunnel', and 'Waltzing Round My Garden'.

https://youtu.be/a38jaxv3uPE

A couple of tunes inspired by the dance music of Central France.  No 1 is named after a bistro in Clermont-Ferrend which used to be a great place for tune sessions.  No 2 was written partly by me and partly by Fabrice Besson, a fantastic player of the cornemuse/musette from near Montluçon in France.

This is my first vaguely serious stab at home recording.  Any advice about what could be improved soundwise would be most welcome!
Cheers to all and stay safe!  :|glug

WOW! I don't have anything to add in terms of recording ideas but these have made my day!  Pure class ;D

Two really nice sets of tunes, Julian.

For advice on 'professional' home recording, I'd suggest speaking to Saul Rose or Anahata - both are masters in the black art!!!

Love these tunes. Of course the playing is total class too. I'm guessing that these would lose their charm in any 2 row versions, lacking the contrast in keys. Best advert for a 3 row box I ever saw.
Sat in on a group lesson with in Witney a few years ago and was knocked out then by your huge ability and lack of ego to boot. Great job. I agree it would be nice to have top quality audio and video to make this a keeper. Perhaps finding a great recording venue like a local church.
We've just appointed a new technician at my school. Met him today, and he has a background in live sound, he might be a good local person to chat with, as he seems to know what he's talking about. Once I get to know him a bit better I'll let you know. Assuming you are still up in the North East.

Wonderfully played, skill exemplified! Such a pity that all "New Starters" don't play like this, eh?

Hi Julian - great to see you here, welcome!

The tunes are wonderful - really nice playing, as I'd expect :-)

Sound quality is very very good too; internal microphones? It sounds top notch to me - only comment I have is that the channels are mixed bass on left, treble on right, which is correct for you as the player, but inverted for anyone watching. There's excellent separation between the two.

Cheers,

Clive

Welcome Julian - great to see you here!
Clive has said exactly what I was going to post: L & R not the same way round as the box (from audience point of view!) which is actually quite disconcerting.
I'd not have quite so much separation between L and R either but that's a matter of personal taste.

Otherwise sound quality superb! And the playing...

Hello to all and thank you for the friendly, helpful comments!

I have taken note of the suggestions above, particularly the one about making the balance between left and right sound more natural.  The suggestion to record in a church is also a good one and in fact I have a friend living near me (I'm still in the North East) who runs a recording studio in a small converted church, so I will pursue that when circumstances permit.

My own home recording setup is pretty basic and isn't really good enough to create professional-standard recordings for commercial release, but it seems to do a decent job making promotional solo demos for playback on YouTube, so I'll persevere with it.

If anyone wants to know, I made the recording using my usual gigging mircophones (stand-mounted AKG C535 for the right hand, Audio Technica M350 contact mic for the bass, both condenser cardioid mics) feeding in to a small standalone digital recorder (Tascam DR-40X, similar to the Zoom H4), then exported the audio file to my pc for minimal editing and basic mixing using Audacity.  Finally, I synchronised the audio recording with video footage of me playing along to the track using my laptop camera and the Windows 10-bundled video editor.

The video footage is admittedly pretty low-quality (maybe it's just me! :-[).  So I think next time I'll use a proper tripod-mounted camera and enlist the services of my 11-year old daughter with her keen eye for detail and impeccable fashion sense!  8)

He's redone them with the audio L and R swapped so they are right way round. The only way to do reliably that is delete the original and upload a new one. (You Tube says you can change the sound track of a video, but I bet that's approximately impossible if you need to sync it with the picture)

I expect you are looking at the links from Julian's own YouTube channel.

That's so gorgeous I don't know whether to burn my boxes or retire early to practise. Yet another reason to get a 3 row box.
