The Accordion Kings
« on: July 05, 2020, 12:22:11 AM »

Did anyone else catch this on the Smithsonian Channel on Saturday night? Vallenato isn't really my cup of tea in normal circumstances, and I only switched this on to have a few minutes look. But I ended up watching the whole thing!
Not only was the speed at which they played fascinating, but also the huge following that the genre has. A great programme!

Yes - I came across that by chance.  Wasn't aware of that genre before.

That’s why hohner focuses most of their diatonics on the Latin american market, accordion music
is a HUGE deal in places like Colombia and Mexico. Both Norteño and Vallenato easily fill up stadiums in their respective countries.

The fast paced vallenato you probably heard was a “puya” which is the fastest “air” of vallenato. The only thing faster that I can think of in latin america is Merengue Tipico from the Dominican Republic.

Edit: Sorry for reviving the thread, didn’t realize that it was from july lol 😑

Rusty, when my wife and I were taking Latin dance lessons back in the mists of time, merengue tipico was the determinant of whether one had Latin genes or not.
