Poll: Tune of the Month for August 2020
« on: July 25, 2020, 08:15:19 AM »

Hi again everyone; hope you're all keeping well! Here's this month's selection:

First, 2 runners-up last month, so:

- In the Toyshop - Will's channel again. Popularised by Martin Ellison of this parish, Dan Quinn and others, this one's a bit harder (I think): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFXdxtVmzKY

- Hellebore - just to prove I don't spend all day, every day, watching Will's channel, here's Toon van Mierlo's (Naragonia) schottische. First, Aurelien Claranbaux's mash-up version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poon2D75Pt4 . This is Naragonia playing it on their recent livestream on bagpipes/accordion: https://youtu.be/P7ShPZp9Kl4?t=2289 . Finally, a straight box version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9FeBBmMbl8

- Josefins Dopvals - thanks for the suggestion Arty, good one! Roger Tallroth's tune, here played by Jamie Huddlestone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbeIIRPpXHQ

- Machynlleth - thanks Steve - traditional Welsh, listen to Steve playing it here: https://soundcloud.com/steve_freereeder/machynlleth , and here's a demo video from Ray Langton: https://youtu.be/4FIRyv8X8V4?t=54

Happy voting everyone!

While their arrangements aren't for everyone, it still worth noting that Väsen have recorded the tune as well:

I have been having a first go at Hellebore. Hard work :Ph All the video clips show three row boxes, are there any examples on a basic two row?

I don't have an example, however per the score on the session (the 2nd one, with 2 sharps) if those are all the notes the tune requires, then it should be possible to play it as it only asks for a Bb, or more prudently, an A#, note outside of the key signature. What challenges that creates for the accompaniment, I'm uncertain, since it... well, vaguely seems like it's written with a harmonic minor scale, needing the accidental below the root note. The first ABC oddly has an K:C dorian, but the score reads rather more as G harmonic minor, and vague attempts at harmonising it seem to agree.

So, your best bet on eg a 2 row D/G would be either looking to your A harmonic minor scale (F natural above, G# below), or play in upper octave E minor (D# below)

I'm not going to vote - but if Machynlleth wins I will give it a shot.

Why Machynlleth? The market town was until the 1860's at the limit of navigation on the Dyfi. By the early 1970's : Best equipped childrens playpark in West Wales - Owain Glyndwr's parliament House- Home of the last McConnel loco tender on the railway network - At the foot of the Corris valley it was still shown on my Dad's 2 1/2 inch OS maps as the terminus of the Corris Railway (OS updates were less frequent in those days).

And it is a dance tune.

And of course it is the (nearby) home to the Centre for Alternative Technology, a truly inspiring place and series of projects. Sadly, closed to visitors at the moment, though the work and research goes on.

Very difficult choice this month just when I might be able to post an attempt...
Trouble is, I play all of them - but whether I play them competently is another matter ! I reckon my best approach is to choose the tune(s) I most want to improve my playing of (and will learn from) - so that excludes at least two ...(though Machynlleth is a great tune as well)

All the tunes on the ballot are way above my playgrade and there's only one which I am remotely interested in learning - and that because it has real time and real place personal associations. I  feel that  voting implies a willingness to try (including posting a recording) of whichever one comes out on top.

There are two tunes I have the notes for on the CF (if I transpose) and two I don't (whatever I do). I don't much like the two I couldn't play, anyway, so I would sit this one out.

Don't confuse the number of voters with the number of vote cast.
