Robin Griggs of Pig Dyke Molly - reworked old recordings
« on: August 01, 2020, 10:46:55 AM »

Robin Griggs, the melodeon player for Pig Dyke Molly until his untimely passing in 2008, made recordings of some of his tunes in a rock band lineup. John Foreman, who played guitar on those recordings, has recently reworked/remastered them and put them on Soundcloud. (Look for "Prog Morris Tunes")

Rob was self-taught and could not read or write a note of music. His compositions were unique and distinctive, and contributed hugely to Pig Dyke's performance style. They are definitely worth a listen if you've not heard them before.

(my interest: I used to play for Pig Dyke Molly, and learned a few of Rob's tunes. I still run their web site, and was asked to put a link on the site after John Foreman contacted the team to tell them about this.)

These are great.  I've enjoyed the first three so far and will make a point of going back and hearing the rest.  Thanks for the link.

Coincidentally, there's a video all about Pig Dyke Molly on the current online virtual Sidmouth website.

I knew there was going to be, but had trouble finding it. Found it now: here it is, if anyone else is interested :

There's a lot of talk and a facepaint tutorial at the beginning, but the second half has lots of music and dance, with current lead musician Kathryn on melodeon. I was there when she joined the team at the age of 16 as a sax player, and will never forget the time, in a post-dance music session, that somebody handed her a melodeon and she got a tune out of it straight away!
