The Double Ray and the Swastika?
« on: August 10, 2020, 07:47:18 PM »

As a matter of historical interest and nothing else:In the 1930's were some Double Rays (possibly B/Cs for the Irish Market?) decorated with  Swastikas on the LH casework ?
There appear to be two examples on ebay just now - one with Vieanna style casework and the other with  streamlined case work.

(NB In the 1920s & 30's Germany was an important trading partner for the emerging "post colonial" economy of the Irish Free State- Siemens for example supplied the generating plant for the Shannon hydro scheme)

Edit: also  Lint - upon - Tweed's interesting comment.

Thanks to Gonk and Lester.
A pity it didn't occur to me to Google the topic rather than raising it as a question.

Where on earth did you think you were going with that one?

I was curious -The sole example of a box with this marking that I had seen was a BC.
For most of the 1930's the Swastika of the (then) German flag wasn't seen internationally as any more sinister than the Union Jack and Ireland in the 20's and 30's often had rather better economic relations with Germany than she did with England. The Shannon scheme for example was built using German equipment and after the war/emergency many Irish Engineers (some of them personal acquaintances)  from the 1950's through to the 1980's took employment with German firms on graduating.

The Hohner Double Ray Black Dot was commissioned by Charles Forbes of J T Forbes, Dundee, presumably for the Scottish market. Here’s a quote from Stephen Chambers' magnum opus ”Irish Button Boxes - from Scotland”
“ I don't know if Shand had anything to do with the next important step, but Forbes certainly did, because it was at his behest that Hohner started to manufacture the B/C "Double-Ray Black Dot" which became available in April 1934, along with the "New Forbes Tutor". This made the B/C system much more widely available, in an instrument of good quality, and at an affordable price.”
There’s a further reference, with photo, in this post by Stephen: http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php/topic,823.msg7060.html#msg7060

(I know that the thread “Irish Button Boxes - from Scotland” by Stephen Chambers (Triskel) appeared here on Melodeon.net, but I can’t find it now).

Bill, I think a discussion thread by that title was posted on  www.concertina.net, but has since been re-named:

Sorry Bill, didn't notice that you had linked the same thread as you gave the old, not current title for it  and had not mentioned concertina.net in the sentence.
