Theo,

The normal site works fine on my Nokia E71. I'm typing this on it now. Links etc all work well. I daresay some phones/operating systems cope better than others.

Will check out the WAP version as well.

Regards

John

Yes the standard version works on my iphone too, but the wap2 version loads faster, though some features are missing.

Also works with simple phones that have a Polaris web browser.

I've just got an iPhone so tried the forum out, starting out with everything looking normal (but indescribably tiny!) then the wap2 version which is much more suited to mobile phone use. My wife ( IT geek, mostly Apple) seemed surprised that the iPhone didn't find the wap2 version automatically. Is it possible to point mobile devices straight to the wap version when they access the forum, or failing that, have a WAP Version button next to Forum Home on the menu bar?

I ask this because I had to go to my PC to trawl through the forum to find this thread and get the URL to type into the phone, but If I hadn't half remembered seeing this thread I wouldn't have realised a mobile version was there.

I don't know, Clive might be able to do some code magic.

I actually prefer it if its optional. Some sites automatically go to WAP when you want to do something that only works on the full site *cough Facebook *cough*. You're sat there swearing at a phone that is capable of showing a desktop site but has been told not to.

The normal site is perfectly viewable on my HTC Android phone. I wouldn't like to be automatically switched to a cut down version.

I'm same as Bill. My Android worked just fine this summer up in the Isere alps, and indeed later from a farmhouse in Veldhoven.  I even managed to 'facilitate' the Melnet accordion layout  debate from up there!

Oh, we must MUST preserve the Fundamental Human Right to post anonymously things on the net that might be socially unacceptable or even actionable if said face to face. Geographic vagueness is just another part of this culture in what should perhaps more sensible be a "social network". Otherwise why such fuss about badges?

FWIW I'm half way up a French (barely!) Mountain. No clue which one. Im going to change my ID to GCF#man when I get back to Birkenhead ;)

Another fabulous dawn  8)

I tried WAP - that clunky URL is a step beyond what I want to type and I certainly wouldn't want it defaulting. EU announced a "30MB/sec to all households by 2020" initiative yesterday and I suspect WAP will go the same way as dialup.

I tried melnet on my new-last-month Android (HTC Desire S, in case anyone wants to analyse this in terms of screen sizes) and while it's possible to view the normal site, the WAP version is much easier.
URL? Bookmarked so I only ever had to type it in once, in fact I think I got a link to it automatically.

I've just looked at the WAP version,  also on my Desire S. It's terrible! So boring, no pics, no navigation buttons. No thanks! Use your zoom to get around the normal site.

When I used to view the site using my iPod Touch, I found the normal site was fine if you tilted the device landscape.

The mobile site is also good on text based web browsers (like W3M), rather than the madness that is the "full website".
