A new one on me!
« on: October 06, 2009, 05:46:32 PM »

An unusual one on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Jedson-3-row-diatonic-melodeon_W0QQitemZ130323267835QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_MusicalInstr_Keyboard_RL?hash=item1e57df40fb&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

From the sellers replies to previous questions, it appears it's in C/C#/F.

I've never come across one tuned like that before. It's like having a C/F with a row of accidentals in the middle!

Hi Pauline - this one's been kicking around eBay for a little while - but I never really managed to find out what the exact tuning of it is. Weird ???

I think its a semi-tone box of some sort, I think hes asking too much and as Al says, its been kicking around for quite a while with no real interest it seems.

Quint/semitone mixed systems have been around since the early days.  I have a three row paolo soprani in G/C/B that looks like it was made around the turn of the 19th/20th centuries.

The ebay one might be G/C/C# with the order of the rows confused by the seller.

G/C/C# makes a lot of sense, and actually sounds quite useful. However, he definitely said the outside row was C/D on the 3rd button, although he also said the 3rd button on the inside row was G/F, which I assumed was just that he had got them the wrong way round, but of course that may not be the case.

Seems the box was made in Germany for a company in the USA. Is it a Hohner in disguise?

A company in the USA?  I don't think so, the ebay listing says it was made for Jedson, a UK company

I have a Mastertone two row which I featured here about a year ago with the intent of either refurbing or making into a midi device.  The quality was so poor I gave up.  If this one is the same construction then the reeds are on mouthorgan plates and virtually impossible to work on.  As to who made them I too saw the claim that it was made by Jedson but when you saw my pics Theo you thought mine was a cheap saxony box circa the war years.  I certainly agree with that conclusion since going inside the box.

Sorry to have a downer on this box but as it says Mastertone on it I have to assume it is the same brand.

Yes, Theo, you're right.
http://euroguitars.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=501   tells the story.

I thought I'd read they were a firm of distributers in the US...could have been the name J.E.Dallas that confused me.  :|bl

I have a BCD, re-worked Hohner Morino Club. Beautiful machine. Ideal for Irish/Scottish, especially for band work with its 10 couplers and 5 sets of reeds. I'd be happy to part with it. Pix on my website, www.tedmcgraw.com under button accordions. The conversion was done by Jimmy Shand Jnr.

Personally I never heard of the C/C#/F tuning. But a century or more ago other strange inventions have been made. So why not? In Belgium the tunings like C/F/E has been quite popular for some time. But on the other hand, the row with accidentals in the middle seems quite unlogical to me.

From the sellers replies to previous questions, it appears it's in C/C#/F.

Actually, from the sellers replies to previous questions, it appears it's in C/C#/G - which is (I guess) why Theo has suggested maybe the seller has mixed up the rows and it's really G/C/C#.
